Sweeping lyricism infuses the whole of "Glomdalsbruden", which Dreyer made in Norway. Tore, son of a poor farmer, loves Berit, daughter of a rich one, but she is promised to another man whom she does not love and whom she refuses to marry. (www.nfi.no)

Feeling in the direction of actors, even if it all seems very slight and casual. You can see future greatness here, though. And that final river sequence is terrifying.

A lot of very simple romantic folk tales were filmed during the silent era, but this obscure (and partially lost but coherent) contribution from Dreyer is better than most of them. For all its simplicity it's never very obvious, and it boasts some distinctly spectacular images.
