The Bride Wore Black

Saying, "You can pick out the exact scenes that influenced Quentin Tarantino!" is like saying, "Hi. I watched a movie once."

Pretty compelling and entertaining, with a definite Hitchcock vibe. What's curious is that the woman is less sympathetic and human than the shady blokes she was seeking revenge from. It gave the film and odd vibe. Worth checking out.

Moreau is captivating as a widowed woman, Julie, trying to have her revenge on the men who killed her husband. Julie's character is somewhat abstract: an empty vessel, moved only by her violent grief. It is the killers who are human, not without flaws, but still human; and the viewer has to judge if they deserve their fate.

'Ultimate sissy' revenge movie about an annoying character played by Jeanne Moreau. But this is not a bad flick, don't get me wrong. But hey, wanna see a nice 'woman seeking vengeance' movie? Try Thriller: A Cruel Picture. Or Lady Snowblood. Ms. 45. I Spit On Your Grave...

A low rent Hitchcock style pastiche that is no fun whatsoever? Not quite but close! Vive la France!

If anything this can be seen as a link between Hitchcock and Giallo, which unfortunately ultimately means it's neither classy nor trashy enough to be interesting.

Flat and uninspired, which is the last thing I would expect to say about a Truffaut film. Not even a good Hitchcock homage, since there is so little suspense nor thrills in the picture. Jeanne Moreau is pretty good but that's all this film has going for it. And I'll concede that the ending is pretty cool.

A revenge thriller that's asinine, contrived and emotionally unsatisfying. Even Truffaut agreed that this was awful.

Great revenge thriller, but Truffaut tried really hard to make this movie Hitchcock like, and it was good, but I would have much rather had Truffaut make a film more his style. Overall, a good film, but maybe a tad bit ridiculous at times, like Moreau's character's ability to seduce anyone she wants. Good film, but let Hitchcock be Hitchcock.

An intriguing beginning that doesn't evolve into anything too worthwhile.

There are a few moments here were Truffaut suggest some earnest pathos, but as a whole this dish is just ridiculous and futile.

A wonderful and fun film with the suspense and mystery unfolding in a deliberate and captivating manner. Moreau gives an excellent performance and Truffaut's direction helps give each scene its own spirit. Part of it might be Hermann's great score but this was very reminiscent of Hitchock in it's masterful execution.

Terrific Hitchcockian revenge thriller, right down to the magnificent Herrmann score. Tarantino claimed he hadn't seen this before making Kill Bill, but I don't see how that's possible. He cribbed almost as much stuff from here as he did from Lady Snowblood. The film is great at building tension, and Jeanne Moreau's stoic, determined bride is a great performance. Truffaut loads the proceedings with plenty of clever touches.

A noiva estava de preto estreava há 55 anos na Alemanha Ocidental. De novo vou reiterar que quando eu era jovem meu cineasta favorito da Nouvelle Vague era o Truffaut, conforme fui amadurecendo ele foi caindo para a última posição no meu ranking e rever esse filme, que era um dos meus favoritos dele, sob essa ótica é bem decepcionante.
