Basically John Wick but the dog doesn't die so the vengeance feels stupid. No, wait. They kill her fiance. Ok. Basically Death Warrant but she isn't just killing random bad guys so the vengeance feels stupid. No, wait. She actually kills the people responsible for her fiance's death. Alright. Basically Law Abiding Citizen but she doesn't go to jail. Close enough.

It's impossible for me to watch The Brave One objectively, because any film with a strong female protagonist automatically wins me over, especially a female revenge film. There are some fundamental problems with the movie, of course. The ending is "unpredictable" in a predictably Hollywood way. Too many of the defining scenes rely on sheer coincidence. But it gets a free pass.

Has the building blocks of a very good film, but never really puts them together. The early sections of the film where emotional ties and characters are built are seriously limited by a cliche and clunky screenplay, but as things wear on this is less of an issue as themes become more simple and revenge related. The central relationship between Foster and Howard never really hits home either. Regardless, I do like a revenge movie and although none too smart, this isn't a bad one.

This film has a lot in common with the movie Death Wish. This movie is well made and both Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard give excellent performances. The script is straightforward but it is effective. If you are a fan of Foster's or of revenge movies then you should check this one out.

Could have potentially been good, but the ridiculous plot, idiotic characters, and boring execution ruin it. The criminals were incredibly ham-fisted stereotypes that made the drama impossible to take seriously and the cops assuming that "wimmin dont commit crimes outside the kitchen" made my eyes roll. Jodie Foster pulls off an impressive performance despite the hammy script and there are some nice displays of brutality, but this film is a dud.

The vigilante genre is inherently politically incorrect, and as such, a tasteful, artsy director like Jordan never had a hope in hell of making a good movie out of this material.
As it stands, he expectedly pussyfoots around any fun that's to bad had at the center of this clichéd tale, and lends it a staunchly serious air of supposed ambiguity that's
simply yawn-inducing rather than intriguing.

Solid little revenge flick, as Jodie Foster comes full circle from Taxi Driver. The script is the typical revenge thing, boosted by some nice moments of gender-reversal. Something is just a bit off about it -- it didn't hold my attention the way I hoped it would. The violence is intensely brutal, and when the movie needs her to, Foster delivers some outstanding acting. The ending is a bit of a cop-out, but Jordan has a slick directorial style and the movie is ultimately worth the watch.

True, the "plot" is reminiscent of Death Wish, with Jodie Foster playing a variation on Charles Bronson's urban vigilante. True, this is the third recent film (the others being Panic Room and Flightplan) in which Foster has played essentially the same character - whippet thin, intense, strong-willed and pissed off. For all that, she transforms Erica Bain into a sympathetic and somewhat complex character, and God knows this film has kinetic energy. It's watchable, and then forgettable.

Very interesting story of real life "superhero" who takes law in her own hands. Unfortunately Neil Jordan has nothing much to tell about it and story drains itself into mediocrity.

A good vigilante movie because it delves into what would make a person go over the edge like that. Foster is a powerhouse! I agree a lot of times the film wavers between boring and decent, but there's a strong ideology behind it that keeps you invested.

This looked promising but 40 minutes in, it turns into a mediocre vigilante movie. I thought we've evolved past movies like this and can actually have movies that discuss the seriousness of gun control and crime.

Like Schmendrek mentions, I dig strong female protagonists; all the better if they're straight-up badasses. But, this is rife with flaws: an extremely contrived plot, a silly ending, and the most annoying use of Dutch angles since Battlefield Earth. I dig Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard, and there's some dramatic potential in a cop chasing a vigilante that happens to be a woman with whom romance is a possibility, but Jordan wastes a lot of that potential. Mediocre/sporadically entertaining.

Vigilante movies work in two cases. Either protagonist is put in a situation, where taking matters in your own hands seems the only solution, thus enabling audiences to identify with him/her, or film is pure exploitation fun, and you can enjoy it without agreeing with its message. This effort by Neil Jordan falls in neither of these categories, though it aims for the first one, and there is nothing fun in it. Jodie Foster's acing is decent, but it is not a comeback role she hoped for.

Pretty mediocre. Some good things, some bad, they cancel each other out and you're left with an entertaining but forgettable movie. Some of the psychological elements were interesting but then some lines were really forced. Things happened way too conveniently. Plus, did Jodie Foster really say "Who's the bitch now?" Seriously? Pass or skip, it doesn't really matter.

Jordan's film introduces about a half dozen intriguing wrinkles to this story of urban vigilantism only to drop them before they develop into anything. This leaves a lot of reactionary nonsense, pointless button pushing and a dreadful, ludicrous ending. Foster does just fine with a performance of dedicated intensity that, by now, she could deliver while simultaneously text messaging and steering an automobile with her knee.

I admire the intention and the craftsmanship, but I found it all to be too unnecessarily brutal, and that too many plot points hinged on conveniences, and luck; Principally, the whole relationship between Foster and Howard. Kudos to Terrence though, for rising well above the material...

Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard are fantastic here, making 'The Brave One' very interesting if not quite fascinating for a mostly rehashed revenge-thriller. The film at least deals with the more intricate emotional levels of its character, rather than making a bloody mess of things like the recent "Death Sentence." By the end, however, we are reminded it's still another vigilante tale.
