The Black Swan

The Black Swan would have been so much better without the forced, broken love story. I look back on a colorful, action packed, fast paced, macho, beautiful period piece and my sight is blocked by the huge column of a dumb, very badly aged romance. I may revisit this, may forgive it a little on rewatch, but for now that's my impression.

Even for 40's hollywood, this was boring -and rapey as fuck.

Find a woman you desire, kidnap her and bring her around with your charm. Everyone knows strong women secretly want to dominated, don't they Jamie Boy.

Beautiful colors and the closest one is going to come a classic looking swashbuckler from this period without Errol Flynn. This was the type of pirate adventure film which would become popular a decade or two later, so it's quite fun seeing one from war years. Total escapism. Sadly with not enough time to sharpen the scenes or story, for they had to stay economical while making this visual extravaganza. So for a visual treat it's nice. As a story - lacking.

The Power-O'Hara scenes are quite fun, exactly what I had hoped for from this, the rest is a bit mixed. There are some enjoyable action scenes, the story works fine, and the cinematography is very pretty but I have to say it gets a bit dull in the middle.

No box-eaters in this swash and a buckle.
