The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Documentary

This eye-opening film delves into a rich era in a way far removed from the all-too typical Time/Life greatest hits of the '60s approach. Based on newly rediscovered 16mm films made by Swedish journalists, the film provides surprising glimpses at an array of black activists such as Angela Davis, Eldridge Cleaver and Huey Newton, and some wonderful scenes of everyday urban life. The Black Power Mixtape estreava há 10 anos no Festival de Miami. Reciclagem de arquivo muito bem vinda, faz um apanhado geral do período com vozes em off contemporâneas das pessoas que passaram por aquela época. Documento interessantíssimo. WEBRip no MakingOff.

the editing, phenomenal. the footage, incredible. the guests, earth moving. the cross-cultural perspective is interesting in how it destabilizes cold war sh*t while making sure not to center the white man

Some incredible and important footage, with the section listening to Angela Davis being the rightly-heralded stand-out. I felt that the film didn't do as much as it could have, not really offering any meaningful new perspectives, and the filmmakers get in the way a little at times; the TV Guide section was awful.

Watched this a while ago. Getteting to hear all these people talk is a treat and it's an interesting premise the way the doc is put together. But tbh I'd rather just watch Davis talk on youtube and shit.

A unique and moving film. We're taken one year at a time on a tour through a period of the American civil rights movement by a Swedish film crew. This film offers a fresh perspective, if nothing else, temporally and obliviously geographically. The hip-hop influenced soundtrack, esp. 'Unwritten' by The Roots, helps propel the film forward; giving the film a decidedly modern context and reminding us of the impact these images have had on our lives--but that there is still work to be done here.

Original and thought-provoking documentary that sometimes gives an entirely new view and perspective on the civil rights movement in the 60's

Watching this in the middle of a UC building occupation in 2012 while the students fiercely debated race in the movement was a unique experience to say the least.

Interesting way to do a documentary. Find an important archive of Swedish reports on protest and progress in 1960's America. Then have participants and music personalities comment on how the movements influenced them and reflect on seeing this foreign viewpoint 45 years on.

This isn't what you would initially think of as a great documentary. It lacks direction and at times feels like an unfinished product. However that also helps portray the sentiments that are expressed. This documentary is extremely raw and honest. All of the footage is shot form a Swedish perspective and a lot of the interviews are by Hip Hop/Rap artists. The best way to sum this documentary up is by calling it understated. It can be unbelievably deep without being deep at all.

Lots of great footage here, with some genuinely powerful, heartbreaking and depressing moments. The commentary is occasionally that moving too, like Talib Kweli's airplane story. Finally, the score co-composed by Questlove is underwhelming. I think mixtape is a great term for it - it doesn't go too deep with history, instead showing some quick highlights of each year.

"Perhaps the greatest irony of all is that such a tumultuous and thrilling time in American history can be so easily reduced to a staid classroom lecture." - Lauren Wissot
