Wow, what the fuck was up with Alan Ladd in this picture? To say he was sleepwalking through the whole thing would be an insult to somnambulists everywhere. He's just awful... which is at least in keeping with everything else in this film.

It was indeed a black night when they decided to dub Alan Ladd a knight. The worst medieval movie ever made--with the possible exception of Bing Crosby's "Connecticut Yankee."

Alan Ladd has the same expression the entire movie, don't think you can call what he did in this movie acting. It's also really amazing how they mount a horse and arrive anywhere in minutes. The colors in the film are very bright and that shows off all the funny gaudy costumes. While I normally enjoy these types of movies, this one falls flat.

Alan Ladd must be one of the most wooden actors of his generation. Whether he is kissing a damsel, fighting a Viking or watching an old friend die, his face never registers the merest flicker of expression. This period romp may feature good cinematography, excellent fancy costumes, and impressive castles, but its story is predictable as anything and most of the acting and fight choreography is hopelessly bad. Peter Cushing's villain only makes Ladd's blank-faced hero look more hapless. Tepid.
