Mystery

The murders start with the body of Robin. He is found with a arrow through the heart, but Vance deduces that the body was placed and not found where he was killed. The note found dealing with the murder was part of a nursery rhyme and signed by 'Bishop'. The only witness may have been Mrs. Drukker and Adolph, but they are not talking. As the murders progress, each one is accompanied by a nursery rhyme. It is up to Philo Vance to unravel the clues and unmask the identity of the murderer 'Bishop'. (imdb)

Surprisingly good sound design, photography and scenery, better than expected for this ok movie. The story was wacky enough to not be boring, but the dry stiff intellectualism made it significantly duller, I really felt the lack of charm with the absence of William Powell.

The mystery itself was pretty good and Basil Rathbone played the role stiff and calculating. The story was a bit too long and a little too dry and lacking well done humor for my taste.

Since Paramount had success with Philo Vance stories, MGM tries too with Basil Rathbone as the detective instead of William Powell. It's a complex murder with lots of red herrings, killings and philosophizing. It's actually quite a good story and it ends up being a enjoyable film with plenty of screwy characters and things happening. Visually quite good too. Lacks any real tops to make it thrilling for a murder mystery, but it's a fine gentleman's detective.
