"I've lived in New York my whole life," says a woman with an English accent. That and the hospital sign reading "DO NOT ENTRY" are my two favorite things about The Beyond, which disappointed me overall. Characters, locations, and potentially interesting ideas are introduced but never developed, with the filmmakers far more interested in how much gore they can put onscreen. If that's what you're into, hey, have at it, but for a movie called The Beyond, I expected a lot more than The Usual.

Stylish Lucio Fulci zombie schlocker about a cursed hotel built above one of the seven gates of Hell. It's really short on plot and character development, but it absolutely revels in scenes of ocular destruction. Oh, and a guy gets his face eaten by tarantulas. Goopy, gory and stupid fun.

The decipherable part of the plot is bare and unintelligible, the dialog is shabby and the acting is downright horrible. The best part of this movie is the gore and the music, both of which are dated to the extent of taming what I'm sure was at least a moderately scary movie in the 80's to being about as frightening as "The Wiggles"--in other words, not watchable.

Final entry in respect of my recent viewings of Fulci's "Gates of Hell" trilogy; I suspect that viewing the films in one sitting would lead to mild insanity. Again, we are treated to bizarre acting, outlandish gore scenes, confused plotting and peculiar pacing. Also on show, however, are some good ideas, some resonant imagery, and more of that charm which gives Fulci's output its cult appeal. Again, this is probably one for fans or the very curious (and patient) only.

The first time I saw this it skipped a reel in the hospital sequence (“That’s another one for Grindhouse movie bingo!”) and on this second viewing it hardly mattered, but not in the way I thought. I’m coming in with some new gray hairs to (re-)see Fulci films as unparalleled, unrelenting exercises in dread; the lingering Valley of the Shadow of Death in cinema language, Inevitability in corporal form. Who gives a damn about a missing plot or film reel? It’s fear for days.

Gave Fulci a shot and this is not for me. I don't care for the gross out gore effects but it's not as bad as other slashers. The plot doesn't make sense but it helps illustrate a descent into madness, I suppose? Fav scene: movie turns into full zombie with the lady being grabbed in the hallway and the guy shooting the zombie in the arm multiple times, then finally figures to go for a headshot. At least he didn't throw the gun away after it ran out of bullets.

If you like a good dose of gratuitous gore packaged in the depths of cheesy-awfulness, then this movie is highly recommended. Enjoy abysmal acting compounded by abysmal dubbing. Random highlights include a head baddie called 'Shpike' (from what I can tell), a quick glance of a guy reloading his revolver by dropping a bullet down the barrel, and morons unloading guns into zombie torsos when it's shown repeatedly that only head shots kill them.

This have moments of macabre poetry surpassing everything else I've seen by Fulci. The opening sequence in sepia tones is a great examples of his queer skillfulness in bringing forth unique moods, a certain pressing, nightmarish atmosphere of morbidity through hyper-stylized framing and mise-en-scène and a curious soundtrack. I don't think the film works so well as a whole, but there are many memorable scenes here where Fulci depict the horror in a dreamlike and endearing manner.

Nobody hates eyeballs more than Lucio Fulci. The plot is basically just a bunch of nonsense, but that's par for the course with Italian horror. There are plenty of creative horror set pieces and there's some pretty gnarly gore, and since it's Fulci, you can count on him to not only hold on it in close-up but to also put it in slow-motion. The blood is straight-up red water, which doesn't look particularly real, but the rest of the effects look excellent.

Very much a fever dream or maybe just an excuse for gory set pieces. The wildly innappropriate soundtrack and the hokey acting is charming at first, but like so many other Italian horror filmmakers, the focus on a single character followed by a brutal murder just gets repetitive and, frankly, boring. Certainly, there are glimmers of inspiration, but they are few and far between. Instead of sitting through this snoozefest, the meta-movie Berber Sound Studio is a far better endeavor.

Weaker than the previous entry into this loosely (if at all) connected franchise by a very significant margin, it features pretty much all of the things that City of the Living Dead has- just with much less overall enjoyment & a less engaging plot. The characters are bland as can be, a lot of the story seems disjointed, the deaths are fun but extremely random, & there's just this sense of "Meh" to the entire thing. It's wholly inconsequential, from beginning to end. Watchable, but just that.

Fulci films are always difficult to rate due to his counter critical approach to narrative and his penchant for gratuitous gore, but T.B is his best film because of its feverish atmosphere and creepy imagery courtesy of Salvati which no doubt originated in Fulci's demented head. Its oneiric structure doesn't truly cohere at the level of plot, but it exudes a palpable sense of dread and unease, and there are several shocking deaths and a complete knockout finale in a uniquely arid hellscape.

This movie is pretty bad, but at least it's the entertaining kind of bad. There isn't really much of a plot to speak of. The direction and editing is quite awful and amateurish, and the acting and dialogue aren't any better. I did like the practical gore effects though - those were very entertaining. The film really relished in them too. It's not a scary movie at all though. I can't really recommend this, unless you're a real horror/gore fanatic.

The opening scene is quite good, and while it's a little gory it had me believing this could be an interesting film. The atmosphere and imagery are certainly good, but the film ends up spinning its wheels a lot of the time, relying on mixing creepy imagery with graphic gore.

Not sure why this is typically considered to be Fulci's best. Far from it. Two things make his films great: the gore and the soundtrack. This has little of either (as in, the soundtrack isn't very good, not that there isn't much of it). Still, the gore that is here is very nice. The tarantulas were a hilarious highlight.

Beautiful, nightmarish Italian trash that takes a few watches to really appreciate its filthy, otherworldly power. Fulci takes the zombie genre to a much more pure and visceral place, emphasising texture over plot. Theres no elaborate chase scenes or traditional suspense or drama here, just a wet, fetid, rotting horror consuming everything its its path.

Nice and creepy story, wonderful sets and locales, the movie is somewhat marred by the fact that it basically stops moving during the imaginative, but technically-flawed gore scenes. The acting/dubbing doesn't help its case either. Still, it's Fulci's best work, and worth a watch. The soundtrack is really really really good and almost always in-print.

Let's be clear: this is not a Good Movie. Like most of the Italian horror from the 80s, it has some pretty good scenes and some pretty terrible scenes. It's in a way quite interesting, but definitely not a Good Movie. However much you'll enjoy this depends very much on whether you enjoy films like these. Perhaps worth noting is that the acting is pretty bad, and the story is just an excuse linking the gory scenes together. But it does have a certain charm.

It's a collection of scenes pasted together that at times seem completely unrelated. The acting is mediocre and the editing makes no sense (actors will jump from one location to another instantaneously without any continuity). The storyline is almost good, but it's buried beneath several layers of incompetence. The effects are good enough for the gore lovers.

Very obviously just an excuse for some splatter-y death scenes. With that said though, the death scenes are crazy good, some of the best I've seen in classic horror. And beyond that, the film in general is very well shot - the opening in particular being very strong. However, the whole here is unfortunately less than the sum of the parts as the film suffers from the lack of a compelling narrative to link these otherwise excellent scenes.

Hotel built on a gateway to hell, it gets opened. Great atmosphere and feeling of Hell leaking into the world. Spiders that take a very long time to kill someone. Fulci really likes to focus on the blood. I enjoyed the several shots in a row at the beginning where we pause on a bit of gore, then zoom in on it. Very good.

A quite bonkers Italian zombie flick from the maestro of eyeball trauma, Lucio Fulci. Hammier than Porky Pig's gammon sandwich, The Beyond makes about as much sense as corned beef flapjacks, but I'll be damned if it isn't an enjoyable 90 minutes of madness. An incoherent movie, basically a series of gore scenes linked together by a threadbare plot. Then again, that was apparently Fulci's intention. Whatever the case, it drags far too much during the middle act to sustain interest. Widely considered to be the late, great Italo frightmaster's masterpiece, this gorefest fully lives up to its advance chiller billing. The simple plot serves as a sturdy frame for Fulci and makeup-FX genius Giannetto De Rossi to fashion a truly stunning series of over-the-top terror tableaux, ranging from bloody crucifixions and acid baths to a faceful-of-spiders sequence and the requisite climactic zombie assault. The pic also sports one of frightdom's more memorable endings.

This film is arguably some of Fulci's finest work, and certainly off the few of his films I have seen thus far, this is the most terrifying of all of them. The plot may be vague and the story nonsensical to some, but if you are willing to give this film a chance and overlook the lowbrow special effects, which are really good given what was availible in 1981, you will find yourself an actual thrillingly horrifying experience. Simply put it's fucked up. And never build building over doors to hell.

Like most of Fulci's films, The Beyond trudges by at a snail's pace. Shots, sequences, and even the entire film itself go on about 25% longer than they should. Big reveal shots are even repeated multiple times (the little girl's white eyes, for example). But still, it's Fulci, and it's one of his most inventive and over the top. We get enough oozing, bulging rubber prosthetic heads here to fill three Argento movies. The cinematography is pretty decent, too.
