So, I may not have been paying as much attention as I should, but if Tal is Dar's younger brother and Tal says Kiri is his cousin, then does that mean Dar leaving to definitely have Kiri as "his prize" means Dar is having sex with his first cousi-[Barthalen's Ator series vomit hits my questioning face]. Goddamn it why does every sword and sorcery b-movie [Barthalen's projectile vomit].

Also, let's not forget - let's NOT forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either. Lots of reviews here noting childhood memories, but no one with the guts to make note of that Tanya Roberts PG nudity? You guys can have the ferrets.

I certainly gave this an "adjusted for nostalgia" rating. Every boy that loves fantasy has seen this D&D style nerd epic 30 times on cable. Mark Singer gets naked chicks in a river, into sword fights, and has a FREAKIN PANTHER to attack his enemies. This couldn't have been better if you added dinosaurs with laser rifles.

Growing up, I was never a "sword & sorcery" fan, and pretty much avoided anything where an oiled up muscly man was walking around the desert half naked with a sword. So when I was a kid I just kinda thought that Beastmaster, He-Man, Conan, Hercules, Masters of the Universe, etc. was all the same thing. So entering nostalgia free, on top of the trademark shirtless sword play beefcake, this ended up being a solid 80's cheese slog of a fantasy/adventure B-movie.

This is a fun 80's fantasy film, but it isn't good by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly no Conan, though perhaps more kid friendly.

This has aged pretty well actually. Still not great by any means though. It was a lot cooler when I was 8 and Lord of the Rings was just a badly-done cartoon.

This and Conan are the best of the genre. The score is beautiful, Singer makes a great hero, the animals are splendid, and Tanya Roberts is a wonderful slave princess. Any questions?

Is pretty entertaining despite the lead actor having zero charisma. Roberts is good in this and makes up for that along with the always fantastic John Amos.

It's a good movie especially with the standards of a fantasy movie in the 80s. We get a stereotypical hero story, it includes mystery, discovering one's inner powers, fight against tyranny and overcoming impossible obstacles. Everything you need for an epic tale. Really the only problem is that it lacks any theme you haven't seen elsewhere, so it fails to become spectacular. Nonetheless the themes it uses are used well. Beastmaster is a solid choice if you are craving for a fantasy adventure.

BlurayRip RARBG.

As a child I used to get fascinated with adventure parties in sword and sorcery flicks. The unity between the leads and the diverse roles each one had - the hero, the girl, the brute, the comic relief (the animals), the wise mysterious saviours (the bird people) - I was dreaming about and now I reminisce with great feelings of nostalgia and lost innocence. The Bestmaster almost achieves that, but it gets too boring too quickly because of its formulaic nature. Tanya Roberts is insanely hot though

I watched this quite a few times in the 1980s. It was fun to go back and check it out again. It is unique in that the hero is a warrior who also has power over animals he uses to assist him. Plus, I generally enjoy fantasy/adventure films from this era.

Actually it wasn't really *that* bad. Campy, definitely, but I feel like it had a pretty solid plot for a sword and sorcery movie. I enjoyed the animals.

This is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination but man is it fun. I like most people that tend to love it watched it as a kids on cable 10-100 times, and as kids we knew it was simply the best shit EVER. Marc Singer is great (don't understand why he never really made it big what with this and the V miniseries) and animals are fun and the villain is vile what more can you ask for from a sword & Sorcery film?

Coscarelli, who's spent most of his career endlessly remaking his first hit _Phantasm_ to lesser and lesser effect, was basically just trying to do a quickie _Conan_ ripoff but ended up with a nice little B movie that's actually a lot better.

There are a lot of problems: the plot is pretty shoddy, the pacing needs work, Singer is not really a good lead, etc. Still its kind of fun in a cheesy way, but it's not really in the same league as superior fantasy films like (the first) Conan.

I personally think that if this movie had been released one year prior it would have done much better. It came out the same year as Conan the Barbarian, a cult classic, and just didn't cut it. Then again, some people must have appreciated it as they have in recent years created a Beastmaster tv series.
