This really has something: what starts in a way that seems simply abstract turns out to be, so it seems, the advent of biomolecules leading into a history of endosomatisation as the struggle to survive, followed by exosomatisation portrayed largely but not exclusively as the history of war, leading to a terrifying but also somehow cosmic conclusion – and all done with beads.

Cute, delicately done (must be hard work in 1977 without computers), nice rhythm, and kind of a history of (endosomatic and exosomatic) evolution in five minutes.

NFB SHORT A DAY #18: Something of a companion piece to McLaren's NEIGHBOURS, dazzling stop-motion beadwork incorporating mythological and evolutionary imagery whose closing question seems to be whether "peaceful" nuclear energy is the final myth we'll tell.

(2nd viewing) When experimental short films are bad, they're insufferable. The Bead Game, however, backs up its creative visuals with a compelling statement on the destructive nature of man and the animalistic nature that rages deep within. I recommend watching it twice, to catch all the subtle details.
