A good action based tale of what went down at the Japanese slave island, The Battleship Island (2017), toward the end of World War II. Tries more to be a spectacular and accessible movie than a proper history lesson, but you still get the idea of how life was at this dreadful Alcatraz mining island.

As with a chunk of Chinese WW2 movies the story here is pretty black and white morality wise, but Korea has been churning out some powerful and well produced war movies, even if they're a tad formulaic. This one is an interesting story with a riveting climax.

Top badass moment? Seeing more evidence regarding the dangers of fossil fuels. I don't think there'd have been as much aggro if BI had been all about growing biomass fuel. It takes a while to work out who’s who in this movie. (Japan? Korea? I thought they were the same; they both make big TVs.) But once you have then it’s very impressive; the action scenes towards the end are genuinely awesome. We also learn never to piss off a clarinet player. 1 (on fire) decapitation, no cats or chainsaws.

A movie so big, it caused accusations of monopoly and started some changes in how movies will be released in South Korea (supposedly good news for arhouse/independent films). As to the movie itself: competently made, however unmemorable product, and worst of all soaked in anti-japanese sentiment. I can't stand this sort of heroic propaganda that invents supposedly historic facts to inspire nationalism and hate.

Almost incomprehensible due to horrifically bad English translations. I was able to grasp the story only in fragments and missed the majority of details. The overall story manages to be revealed but to say it was painfully hard to enjoy would be a gross understatement. Chaotic and confusing in the extreme. I might have enjoyed it more without any translations at all.
