The Avenging Conscience

I find it difficult to rate movies from a century ago because there is a bit of an awe whenever anything remotely challenging happens visually to not get caught up in praise. You wait long enough and you can't believe The Monkees had that sound forgetting the contextual details of that era. At the same time, you're daft if you get upset people get lost in Daydream Believer. So, The Avenging Conscience. Wherever it sits contextually within its era, it does some neat stuff, particularly guilt.

I feel like this is the moment that Griffith evolves as a storyteller. Using The Tell-Tale Heart as a jumping off point, Griffith crafts a film with real characters and real moments, as well as some wilder, more non-traditional sequences.

A decent little adaptation with some strong impacting moments, but it doesn't feel like more than that.

Considering it's production date, decent special effects.
