In the old days it was called hypochrondria, or black melancholia. Now, apparently, it's termed the Asthenic Syndrome. Whatever it is, Nikolai, a teacher of epicly indifferent pupils, has got it, and it's not much fun. Worse yet, quite a few other people, even an entire society, seem to be afflicted with the same problem writ extremely large... (imdb)

Perestroika-era Russian life chopped up and run through a blender with an added hint of absurdity. Because it's so haphazard, sometimes grotesquely humorous, and at one point self-referential, I sensed a faint echo of Fellini ("Rome"?), but the tone is generally somber (and then some) rather than nostalgic. Advanced and quite brilliant filmmaking from Kira Muratova.

the thematic scheme of a society feeling too weak to fight back is all too relevant for me (and others) right now. we look at our society and fail to see the very human problems that consume us daily, and this film explores the human in an oppressive state in such a beautiful non-linear way.

Unpleasant to watch and rather bizarre but it does have its moments.
