the string of slick Michael Bay horror remakes we got until Nightmare on Elm Street (I don't know if there were more I was too annoyed to look) were pretty fun and dumb, and Amityville dives into the deep end of dumb with ridiculous jump scares and dangerously shredded step-dad, Ryan Reynolds.

Again with the remakes...But this is an OK flick, if you have not seen the original then you will enjoy it more, and lets face it the original was not that good. Actors are good to watch, but suffers from that Made In Hollywood feel.

Silly and goofy horror movie doesn't work remotely as a tense or scary experience (from someone who falls for the lamest "jump scares"), but there's some good, derisive fun to be had here at the absurdity of the premise and its execution. The performers certainly can't be faulted, managing to hold to their dignity despite the clunky dialogue and muddy plotting; Moretz proves again that there's no material she can't enliven, outshining all around her and giving the best performance in the film.

Encouraged me to research its background after viewing it, and found from the net that indeed some place called Amityville exists in the US, but the real murder story has been waxed to look horrific in the movie. It's not a bad decision by the director since the movie is entertaining and thrilling anyway. MY SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; 69-1=Forget it

A completely paint-by-numbers horror movie. It's like having an original thought was offensive to the makers. The use of music, the 'dragging the axe across the floor' scenes, the exorcism - it even has an "Indian burial ground" aspect. It gets a point for unintentionally making me laugh a few times.

Maybe don't cast ryan reynolds in horror films... or any film for that matter (he's really hot tho so i appreciate all the shirtless scenes (and there are tons of 'em)). But wow what a movie, truly a landmark for the genre.

For whatever reason, this movie just doesn't work. First, it doesn't feel like it's truly the Amityville house, it is structured incorrectly. The windows aren't everything! Secondly it feels more like a haunted house tale than a generic evil-incarnate film. So, because you don't get that sensation that the house itself is evil and is instead haunted, there's no real reason why Ryan Reynolds' character should be going insane. Furthermore he can apparently pick and choose when he goes crazy! Dumb.

When George Lutz (Ryan Reynolds) and his wife, Kathy (Melissa George), find a beautiful new house in the small town of Amityville, N.Y., they think the place is too good to be true. After they move in with their kids, they find out the cheap price tag is thanks to the house's sordid history: The former tenant murdered his family after supposedly being possessed by the devil. Believing the home is haunted, the couple find a priest (Philip Baker Hall) to help them rid the place of evil spirits.

Honestly it started off as one of the better Platinum Dunes productions before it jizzed its pants with that ending. It feels more like they tried and failed to get the rights to The Shining and went with this. The cast was no good but I think the saving grace here might have been the direction and cinematography as there are some fairly disturbing scenes that are hard to count as jump scares and some nice still shots. Wasn't a huge fan but not the worst horror franchise, Bay has ruined.

Scared the shit out of me. I know, I'm a wimp. I really enjoyed the movie but I give it lower marks for the fact that it is SOOOO far removed from the actual events it's irritating, not funny. It's a bit disturbing how little the actual facts have to do with the whole "based on true events" statement. This is very real proof of that. Read about the actual events and you will find what I'm speaking of. If I ignore the fact that it was supposed to be based on actual events, it was good.

Could have been a lot better really. With this and Blade Trinity Reynolds has opened up a lot of non comedy possibilities for himself though. I was worried that when he wigged out it would be like in The Shining and he'd be too funny for it to have any scares, but thankfully that isn't the case
