Essentially true story of how Spartan king Leonidis led an extremely small army of Greek Soldiers (300 of them his personal body guards from Sparta) to hold off an invading Persian army more than 20 times as large. The actual heroism of those who stood (and ultimately died) with Leonidis helped shape the course of Western Civilization, allowing the Greek city states time to organize an army which repelled the Persians. Delivers on everything it promises - 100s of men with cloaks and spears marching around the countryside while the orchestra bangs drums and blows trumpets. The old trick of getting an American hunk to lead the film and surrounding him with Brits acting their hearts out has never worked and doesn't succeed in this one either. It's sword and sandals fun, looks gorgeous, and the battles have a rhythm and logic to them - but there's nothing here to really make it an epic.

Nice little film. Has a slightly camp and fake feel, perhaps due to its age, but mainly I feel due to the glitzy direction. This means it certainly does not compare with other war drama and 'epic' style movies of the era. Even so, it will entertain enough to be worth a watch once.
