The movie is about "finite nonlinears," robots that closely resemble human beings but are even more perfect than humans. They are intended to eventually replace human beings in space flights. Somewhat apprehensive about their usefulness, the United Nations sets up a space flight to determine their reactions to the human beings who also make up the crew. Pirx is selected as a commander of the flight, although the identity of the robots is not revealed to him. (imdb)

Nobody can be told how low-fi the effects in this film are. They have to be seen to be believed.

For a no-budget adaptation of Stanislaw Lem, I found it remarkably surreal more than anything. The manic soundtrack and the fairly bland cinematography clash in a somehow discomforting yet memorable fashion.

After some rather intriguing earthbound scenes, a pilot agrees to participate in a Turing test in outer space. His epistemological ruminations become the subject of an inquiry in part focused on the necessity not just of knowing the facts but interpreting them, and the outcome is the recognition that what separates the artificial being from the noetic one are the latter's flaws, but where these are the source of its singularity and care. Interesting but needed work. Score by Arvo Pärt helps.

It's uneven but so beautifully bizarre I can't resist it.
