A unique villain performance and tons of gnarly gore don't compensate for the nonexistent story, moronic characters, lack of genuine scares, and cheap-looking digital photography. For gorehounds and Juggalos only.

Ugly, mean-spirited and about as clever as the title suggests. But you can't really deny the gore.

love the optimism of putting "in memory of romero, craven and hooper" in the credits. as if this shit could withstand being mentioned next to those. i'm puzzled how someone with at least some degree of budget and creative freedom still tries so unerringly to adhere to the done to death tropes, themes and formulas, instead of giving things a memorable spin. but that's just me, obviously. if you're up for some cheap ultra violence, you can do worse, i guess. not a whole lot, though.

I'm a believer in keeping in mind what a movie is while rating it, and so keeping in mind that Terrifier is a B movie, at best, I quite liked it. The use of practical effects is awesome fun, and it's easy to appreciate the crazy Art the Clown. I had a good time with this one.

Terrifier is like putting a bunch of horror movies into a Crock-Pot and seeing what you end up with, and as a result it’s pretty messy. It’s a throwback to 80s (maybe 70s and 90s too?) slashers, while being a darkly comedic b-horror bloodbath. The comedy and horror does not mesh at all, but I did enjoy the bizarre humor it displayed, and wished they went more in this direction. The characters were underdeveloped, the score was good. I didn’t dislike it, but I can’t recommend it.

Grading on a curve b/c I admire the filmmakers: this was made independently & seems to have achieved its ambitions- make a cheap slasher that can stand against other slashers & still get noticed. While story-wise it's a standard & unremarkable slasher pic (there's some plotholes &several of the victims are young, annoying & do stupid things), the slasher himself is genuinely creepy looking & there's plenty of gore, especially one scene which I found unnecessarily repugnant, but it gets attention

A flat out
Balls to the wall unapologetic slasher
The story is pretty non existent
But with this movie
(I don’t think it’s necessary)
 One word of caution
It’s definitely not for the squeamish
Consider yourself warned

Very average. Has your standard moronic characters (most of whom are forgettable), paper-thin plot, and unfortunately, some really awful dialogue. This screenplay very much so reads like a first draft. But I’ll give credit where credit is due; the gore is realistic and very well done, especially given how over-the-top much of it is. Some of the kills actually feel very gritty and scary. Art is legitimately funny and is the one thing elevating this above mediocrity. I’m not likely to revisit it.

Woof, what a mean movie. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, but Terrifier is a brutal watch. A plotless 80-some minutes of head stomping and bisections. The gore is impressive and the villain is quite upsetting.

Art the clown has the makings of a potentially good new horror icon. He looks menacing and prowls dark streets and hallways with pure sadistic intent. It's a shame that Leone can't find much to do with him other than stalking and brutally mutilating his victims. The most effective moments are when Art is being mischievous and playing with his prey before attacking with extreme ferocity, but the rest of the film is a stock standard 80's throwback filtered through 'gorno'

Very wet and gross and excessive. However, it sets up its tone so effectively with comic book visuals that there is something to it that is very fun and very stupid. The biggest flaw is that, in its excess, the movie kind of languishes a bit too long on its set piece kill scenes.

I have a hunch that the people who recoiled from this movie generally fell into one of two camps, those obviously put off by its violence and gleeful sadism, and those who worked on projects in film school.

Art the Clown is an effective villain and the gore is impressive, but this lacks a vision and felt like it was mostly set in a warehouse. I wish Art remained unambiguously a real person and not supernatural.

Twisted, gory and downright unpleasant, Terrifier does have one essential thing going for it that sets it apart from most modern slashers: an utterly unpredictable and unforgettable killer. Soundtrack and special effects are also memorable. Drips with macabre sleaze.

There is a lot to say about this. Terrifier showcases a lot of potential when it comes to its grindhouse presentation and grainy capture. The special effects in particular are quite impressive for its limitations as well and you can tell there is a lot of talent behind the camera. However, the lack of story elements and character investment is severely lacking. Not to mention, this has some truly disgusting sequences that are awful. Truly a mixed bag with plenty of potential.

While extremely flawed, this movie achieves its goals at being an interesting low-budget slasher movie. The characterization of the antagonist, which is the heart of any movie in this genre, is well made and even a little original -- everything this kind of movie can hope to be.

A pure shock-for-shock's-sake sort of movie, it does get points for the ridiculous amount of gore throughout- including one particularly gruesome scene that I can respect, even if I didn't enjoy it. The characters all only really exist to be killed by Art, the story is pretty weak, & the pace drags. There's a lot of potential in it, though, from its ideas to its villain, and it definitely does what it sets out to do- be insane, disturbing, and memorable. All in all, it's worth a look for that.

Don't know what led me to this specific thought, but if David Lynch had made this movie, it'd have been called a classic for decades to come. It's not as bad as people are making it. Standard horror flick, doesn't try to reinvent anything, adheres to the rules of the genre, has a really creepy vibe, top tier sound design, properly sick visuals. Wouldn't be fair to criticize harshly a movie that is exactly what it claims to be.

Limp direction and eyesore photography, but the obvious care put into the effects is guilt-inducingly endearing. One kill seems like a call-it-homage to BONE TOMAHAWK; that it's much more effective there testifies to the importance of other crafts. (The stompcapitation makes me wonder if Zahler paid it back in BRAWL.) Some memorable imagery, and a development or two might even be said to possess wit (gun). But doesn't the non-chronology kinda hobble the thing? Was it supposed to be a surprise?

Costumed slasher movies never really died out since their 1970s-80s heyday - they only smell that way - and Leone doesn't really reinvent the wheel in any way. Being a makeup effects artist by trade, though, he turns the killer and the splatter into a true labour of love. Even the acting isn't terrible. The Terrifier franchise belongs to a very tired and largely silly genre, but therein it does set the bar.

Shock gore galore with a well played villain even if the lack of any plot brought it down. Art the clown is pretty spectacular w the expressions. I'm not a huge fan of obsessive shock gore, but for a 45k budget they did pretty well. A lot of it is so overkill to a super campy level that you can't take it seriously and I suppose that is the point, but at 1hr25 it was still too long. The sequel is apparently significantly better, but also an hr longer. Still just not my bag. 4.0 here.

I always find it difficult to rate these 0-50-rating films. Exactly how bad should it be to reach 10 and how much better should it be to reach 50 then? I don't know. This film was absolute garbage in a very bad way. Meaning: I don't mind a B horror movie and they can even be quite good but this is barely a movie. It has absolutely zero story. It's just a sequence of clicheic scenes that have a scary clown that you can screenshot. If you've seen the poster, you've seen the movie.Absolute trash

Objectively not great, but aspirational, still. Sawing a woman in half isn’t all that much… but doing all your own gore and creating your own slasher icon in your basement is. Glad I watched the sequel first because I wouldn’t have cared otherwise: it’s very much a dry run for better/terrifingier things and we should all have the space to try things out before going all Art.

Art makes for a kind of fascinating slasher villain because (for the most part) it's questionable whether he has any supernatural aspects. He doesn't appear super-strong or indestructible, and very well might be just some sadistic dude slipping through the cracks of society. For its low budget, this movie is disgustingly gory, and I'd be fascinated to see it develop into some long-running bizarre franchise like Halloween or Hellraiser.

Watched the sequel first. This is still entertaining because Art is such a compelling character, who is performed immaculately. However, he doesn't express his personality as much in this one. When he does, it's great (the horn bit). But what hurts this a little is that while the second does have a surprisingly intriguing story, this does not. You're just watching him go from kill to kill. But thinking about it, I've realized that this is short enough where that doesn't bother me.

Had to see what all the fuss was about with Art the Clown. This movie would be scary, even without the incredibly graphic scenes. However, a warning don't watch if you are squeamish at all. Some of the most extreme acts of violence i've ever seen on film.

The biggest problem is that it just isn't really that terrifying. It does everything else right: great atmosphere, proper build-up of tension, fun retro grainy look, and - most notably - possibly the best slasher villain in decades. Still, although the clown creeps me out and the various gore scenes are certainly shocking, not one of the proper scares landed with me. It's otherwise effective and fun but with the plot being so thread-bare the film's limitations really do stand out.

I have mixed feelings about this. The film is good in making me dread what gruesome death's going to happen next and the feeling I discover there's a lot more time left. The film is terrible in the bad character decisions---how many times are we going to see people walk away from a stunned Art? You just saw him kill people. Kill him. Knock him out. Tie him up. Don't just walk away or ignore your cell phone. I don't get why final girl doesn't run away. Fav scene: sawing a girl in half was gross.

Not bad a definite improvement of the original short. The clown is different but I'm not sure if I like it better or not. Now the actor that place Art here is much better than the first guy and does well with his role. Everyone else ranges from average to bad. The effects are well done for the most part but there are a couple really bad moments. My biggest complaint really is that it felt a little long.

If anyone knew I was talking this way about this movie, I'd probably get some serious guff, but I just don't get it. This was a pleasant surprise. A brain-damaged rock could have written better dialogue, it lacks any sense of suspense, and it's more than trope-heavy, but the washed-out neon Instagram filter color grading actually looks really nice, the clown character's design is great, and the gore is plentiful and well done.
