Tennessee Johnson

Awesome! Andrew Johnson just went from a guy who I knew nothing about to a guy who I know stuff about! Thank you, movie! But it's probably 80% lies. But still! Still waiting for that Millard Fillmore biopic.

An intense performance from Van Heflin and remarkably subdued performances all-round, even from that ham Lionel Barrymore. Directed in high Germanic style by Dieterle, this biopic is not nearly as stuffy as his Paul Muni films.

Where to place this Presidential biography? I did like the somewhat unglamorous way Van Heflin portrayed the 17th President if the United States. But overall this was as good a film as Andrew Johnson was a President. Has it's strange appeal, but it's not necessary the most positive experience.
