More akin to the cartoon so it’s bizarre they went with it being so dark and gritty. Movie did Dominos Pizza no favours , pizza in this looks absolutely disgusting. I think of the little Splinter rat training with Master Yoshi at least once a month for 30 years now. A dark and gritty turtle movie, no wonder Raphael is so moody. You wouldnt even bat an eye if Travis Bickle bumped into Leonardo in this.

For the undiscerning, adolescent, ninja-crazed me, this was the coolest thing in the world. Rewatching the film many years later, I love it still - and I'm happy to report that it actually holds up incredibly well, being not merely nostalgia-awesome but actually one of the strongest of all comic-based/superhero/kids movies. Cowabunga!

One of the clearest memories of my early life is the time Donatello came to my 4th birthday party. So honestly I'm not sure if I can ever really not be biased about TMNT. As a child spending too much time tumbling around with wrapping paper tube weapons pretending to be a ninja, this was the good Turtles movie with Casey Jones, but it makes me sad when Raph gets hurt and they put him in a bath on a farm. Although now I can appreciate the more serious elements, I stand by my kindergarten review.

I've realized my knowledge of pre-2000s New York comes exclusively from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Warriors. Interestingly, TMNT has a higher rate of grime, baseball bats, and premeditated murder.

It turned the bright, slapstick, toddler-friendly TMNT cartoon into a movie with a gritty, urban, dangerous New York City, a brooding, violent Raphael, a murderous Shredder, ruminations about death and mortality, and profanity. That is awesome, and this is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Damn near impossible to love without nostalgia goggles, but for those of us who grew up on TMNT cartoons and toys, this movie was a dream come true. Even beyond that, the puppetry and costume design coupled with martial arts is seamless and very admirable, and some of the jokes still hold up. Definitely stylized to the extreme for its audience, but that's what makes it perfect for that demographic.

I have nothing but fond memories of this film. It was pretty expertly done, when you consider that it is a live action rendering of a cartoon. Is it cheesy? Very. But it's TMNT. Bow down.

Coming back to this in adulthood, it's a more solid narrative than I expected, with a strong plot and characters and a strong theme about the validity of found family and what father-son relationships should be. The big flaws are, first, the pacing, with the latter half of the film dragging on a bit; and, second, giving the less interesting character of Casey Jones way too much of the plot and character work. I'm sorry but this could've been done by an anthropomorphic reptile, is all I'm saying.

As someone who grew up with only watching the sequel, this one is not ~my~ Turtles. Sure, all the elements are there, but it is a somewhat darker look at them. I really want that kid's Sid Vicious shirt, even thought I am not a Sex Pistols fan. The pizza in this looked disgusting.

Surprisingly dark for a kids movie, and one with such a ludicrous concept at that. Captures that gritty, albeit satirical, tone that the original comics had, while also balancing the sillier moods of the show, which is no easy feat. Cinematography is somewhat dull and dingy, which is fitting to movie's settings, and even kinda adds to the serious elements. Score is fun. Jim Henson's work on the film is of course phenomenal.

That it was a staple of our childhood probably helps conceal the fact of how ridiculous it all is. Still, on its own terms, it's not that bad -- it's probably the best realization of this concept that could ever possibly be made. There's a humble quality about it that sets it apart from more cynical Hollywood cash-ins (it was, after all, an independent film).

I was such a huge fan of the Turtles that this movie blew my 6 year old mind. I remember my mom taking me to see this, and just loving every second. It was so much darker than the cartoon which is probably why it's still watchable today even though the original cartoon is not. I love how Raphael got to be a bad ass because he was always my favorite (his accent was obnoxious thought). Elias Koteas was great as Casey Jones as well. Too bad the sequels weren't as good.

This is actually not a bad movie. The lighting makes New York look very gloomy, which gives the movie a more realistic look, so if you can accept the premise of 4 walking and talking ninja turtles and their rat sensei, then the movie actually works. It has its funny moments, the turtles are giving different personalities and the plot works. The franchise was destroyed by the following movies which are all atrocious, but this first movie is an allround must see cult classic.

The story is very true to the first issue of the comics, toned down in violence as to make it safe for children. It's fun and memorable, and brings back a lot of fond memories for people who grew up during the late 80's and early 90's surrounded by the cartoon show and the toys. The real crowning achievement of the film is its amazing puppetry and costume design. It's quite easy to forget that the turtles are actually short guys in foam rubber suits, and to just accept them as real. Really good!

A prudish bloodlessness keeps this from being a truly mature action film, but still it's a surprisingly gritty city portrait which contains often dark and sometimes rather artful passages. Most of all it's actually hilarious, with more one-liner gags than Schwarzenegger's entire catalog. Nostalgia can be a strong influence on what we find tolerable, and indeed I loved this as a kid, but I'm certain this movie is legitimately very good.

Worse than I remembered or hoped and I'd rank this clearly below recent "Mutant Mayhem". It's surprisingly dark considering the target audience and contains both goofy humor and hard hitting violence. The plot is nothing special, but the batter between the team works quite well. There are no real stand out scenes and it gets somewhat boring at times. Still, there's not too many martial arts films suited for (almost) whole family and this might work as a gateway into Jackie Chan films and beyond.

It's super cheesy watching and while I can appreciate how tricky it must have been to do those flips in turtle suits, everyone in this movie just seems like the most ineffective fighters ever now that we're spoiled with fight scenes of modern movies. I also found it funny how Shredder's method of collecting a personal army was a whole big thing of inviting kids over to steal stuff and rewarding them with all those things kids love: video games, skateboarding, smoking, alcohol, and RAP MUSIC.

I don't see the appeal, and I find it interesting that this has managed to hold onto a relatively decent reputation. The puppetry from Henson is obviously very good but other elements are mediocre at best. The script is competent by the skin of its teeth, but all the turtles are indiscernible as separate characters. The romance doesn't function, various plot and emotional elements are poorly developed, and the film really scrapes the barrel as to what constitutes humour.

I've seen this movie so many times it's hard for me to not quote every minute of it. But, even at the time I knew that it wasn't a great movie. I knew that the second movie was better. It may prove to be too violent or advanced for the kids, A little too kids-friendly for the adults, and made specifically for the fans. Which in turn is its greatest flaw and greatest strength. In a perfect world there should be nothing wrong with creating something to please the fans. Not to mention the comedy in the film is appropriate and there is far more hit than miss. Sadly, the turtles get short-changed in their own movie, the filmmakers just didn't really seem to trust them to carry it, so give all the human moments and real story to the human characters. There's exceptions of course - Leo and Raph get a pinch of characterisation each, and there's a beautiful scene where they all meditate and commune with their master Splinter - but really it's not their movie. The flick is at its best when it's Three Stooges style slapstick violence with the Turtles.

From that period where gangs were a big social issue until everyone realized suburban white kids weren't at risk of joining gangs and stopped caring. Having not grown up with this I can only call it an ugly, scattered, mess of a movie. Sublimely stupid. For a movie about ninja turtles this goes beyond dumb, reaching a state of idiotic zen. I'm a bit biased on this one, since I saw it a dozen times when I was a kid. Watching it again I still really like it, although Shredder is an underdeveloped villain (he needs to do more evil in the film's present) and I don't understand why April wants to get with Casey Jones so bad. It's also odd in that Leonardo doesn't get much attention - the focus seems to be on Raphael's sarcasm (as it should) and Michelangelo's humor (better than I remember it but there's too much of it here).

Good CG animation as far as the technical side goes, but this film falls short of the feel of the original tv animation while trying to reconnect with an audience who have grown up and only have the turtles as childhood memories.
