Elle Fanning gave a superb performance in this,mediocre movie otherwise though

Impossible to ignore the similarities to "The Neon Demon" where Fanning essentially plays the same role. But for every bit as depraved and provocative as Refn's film gets, "Teen Spirit" becomes equally toothless and bland. Watch this only for Elle Fanning's magnetic screen presence, which has been making a ton of below average films worthwhile.

At times clever & intriguing, it also has an infuriating habit of falling back on old tropes, particularly in the second half where the narrative largely falls apart because of said tropes. A strange (but enjoyable) blend of "artsy" & more straightforward styles, it's anchored by Fanning's solid-if samey- performance & Buric's surprisingly excellent one. Themes of chasing your goals & coming of age do resonate, but there's nothing unique or fresh anywhere, which hurts it. Overall, worth a look.

Despite the zealous attempt at gritty cinematography this is a tidy, cheesy and generic tale about... a pretty average singer going through a talent show (in 2019?) in which the characters are unappealing; the settings and machinations of the industry unrealistic and overly simplistic, the inevitable "fallout and make up"- cliche unconvincing as always, the big emotions undeserved. The cringeworthy coda flashing instagram and facebook likes shooting up makes me think it might be a parody?

Not the most original movie of the year, but a very good version of this kind of story. Elle Fanning is great, the music is surprisingly good and the cinematography is memorable.

Not terribly original, but a well-acted rendition of a classic underdog story. The cinematography is kinda love-it-or-hate-it, but the music is catchy.

Elle Fanning is as good as always in what is an absolutely nothing film otherwise. Practically a feature length instagram story.
