Maureen O'Sullivan shacks up in the jungle in what is essentially a very pleasant sex fantasy from the director of the equally adult and sophisticated Thin Man. It's O'Sullivan's film, and it's the monosyllabic apeman who is objectified for a change by a delightfully modern and playful Jane. The sequel, Tarzan and his mate, is just as good, and even sexier.

My previous experience with Weissmuller's Tarzan movies had all included horrible plots, bad dialog, and boring everything. This one is no different, only it bleeds stock footage and makes no effort to hide it. The only plus in this one is that Weissmuller still looked pretty young in 1932, whereas in the 40's he looks like he should have had a heart attack running around in the jungle.

The first sound version of Tarzan and still the best, despite its lack of sophistication; it is a tightly edited, action-packed adventure that retains its freshness and fantasy appeal.

This was the daddy of all Tarzan pictures and, as such, is worth your attention.

As an action film for the time, alright; not the most polished by a long shot (and the "interaction" with the left-over location shots from Trader Horn can be a bit silly) but alright, and packed with a lot of goings-on with animals some realer than others, ape suits, and an athletic Weissmuller. But it's really Maureen O'Sullivan that carries this, and not just in the romance scenes.

Why can't movies be like this anymore? High adventure at a human scale.

The usual things haven't aged well (so-so ape suits; superimposed footage; blacks existing only to be abused/killed) & the idea that Jane would fall for Tarzan is really hard to believe (esp how uncomfortable she looks in the water scene), but its easy to see why this stunned back then: many animal scenes & stuntwork still impress; it's non-stop jungle action & there's even real emotional conflict when Jane's group kills an ape. The implausible romance is still sweet & Jane's surprisingly tough.

W.S. Van Dyke had just had a big success with "Trader Horn", which used a tone of footage shot in Africa, so this film was conceived as a follow-up and a way to use a bunch of unused footage. This ends up hurting this film since it often feels like an excuse to superimpose the actors over a ton of unrelated African footage. Otherwise, it's a nice setup for this film series, but it's pretty stodgy and uninteresting when compared to the next film, the magnificent "Tarzan and His Mate".

Ano de Centenário de André Bazin: Repassando os filmes citados em Qu'est-ce que le cinéma? Filme #29. Pre-code no seu melhor. Sorte da Jane que o Tarzan foi criado por macacos, já que o humano é o único animal que estupra. DVDRip Oldies

Tarzan knows how to handle a woman. Rough! A entertaining version of Tarzan. It was the first one with Johnny Weissmuller and that famous Tarzan call. Plenty of bad production elements, but thats part of what makes it amusing. It still has a bunch of good action scenes that captures your attention and makes it a fulfilling movie.
