Tales of Manhattan

Duvivier has the wonderful ability for creating stories that play with the imagination and bring out the hidden sides of people in a way that doesn't seem sincere enough to be condemning but neither frivolous enough to be mistaken for mere comedy.

Here;s a great one I'm glad I stumbled upon. The story follows a cursed coat and the lives it intersects with, mostly in NYC.

Solid movie, although some of the stories are way too long. I enjoyed the character and this more comedic tone fits well, even if I prefer Duviver’s more dramatic movies. That ending was quite wholesome and unexpected

This was so undeniably French! Not a surprised to see Julien Duvivier credited as the director. Very Hollywood too, as it was there Duvivier spent his war days. The stories have time to sink in and are quite clever. Only the last one felt overly forced as it focused too hard on giving to the unfortunate. What's most striking was the immense star-power involved! Just look at the roster of actors. Nearly all were A-listers. It's one great get-together for moral!

A series of 5 stories interlinked by a jinxed tailcoat. It gets better as it goes along. Worth watching for the Charles Laughton and Salvation Army episodes. A great ending as well.

Uneven anthology movie is much better with the (originally unreleased) W.C. Fields sequence restored.
