Over the past two decades, the inherent cheesiness has only matured from a fresh mozzarella to a pungent gorgonzola. In either case there are people with tastes to match. This one is best watched by people who'd rather laugh at a scary movie than scream.

Very cheesy, but I'm a sucker for anything Tales from the Crypt and this is essentially Tales from the Crypt with an urban spin.

Think of it as a racially charged version of tales from the crypt. All of the stories in this anthology are very much race focused, and I think that worked for this film. Recommended only for big anthology horror fans, and I suppose for fans of race focused films, as well.

It's kind of like the film The Hughes Brothers could have made if they decided to make an EC style tribute with racial implications; and if they had less talent behind the camera. And this is ultimately the problem with Tales From The Hood: for all its alleged subversion, it just looks like a bland TV movie. It lacks the cinematic energy necessary to drive home its heavy handed observations about U.S race relations in a way that is truly visceral and unnerving. Nice try, but no cigar.

Interesting "urban" spin on Tales from the Crypt with two weak tales and two great ones.

Cheap, and sort of derivative. I did like the stories with David Alan Grier and Corbin Bernsen, and I liked the music enough to buy the soundtrack CD back in High School. Overall, the quality's about even with that Tales from the Crypt show from the 90's. So, if you were a fan of that, try this.

ANGRY BLACK MAN MAKES ANGRY BLACK HORROR FILM. The racist politician against the Urkel doll story was a delight. I can't NOT see David Alan Grier as his Men on Film character from In Living Color so that made his segment really dark.

An anthology horror movie that makes all white people look evil. It's fun and cheesy and cheap, but overall a good campy horror movie that's over the top and stinks of 90's culture.

This movie is just terrible, but it has a charm that I can't shake. It's just super fun, and I have a weak spot for anthology flicks anyway.

Generally, I'm a big Rusty Cundieff fan, but Fear of a Black Hat this movie is not. This is one of those, "Why was this made?" films. Horror doesn't need an racial or ethnic angle to appeal to the masses. I didn't see the ACLU protesting the poor representation of African-American filmmakers in B-Grade horror, and this film is now the official reason why we will never see it. Oh...actually...this and Bones.

Pretty dreadful, although it's fun to see some urban horror now and then.

David Alan Grier is amazing in what may be his only non-comedic, non-leading-man role ever. The rest of this movie, not so much.

An atmospheric and enjoyable homage to EC's more moralistic horror comics of the 50s. Despite the campy surroundings, the film's stories all engage racial issues in a way that, while not the least bit subtle, is definitely provocative.

The historical significance of this has only grown over time, 7& it really can't go unmentioned. That said, on its own this is still a pretty darn good movie. Not amazing, but good. Clarence Williams III is incredible in his role, the rest of the cast does well in theirs, & each of the stories is a nice balance of dark humor & serious moments reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt. The last story feels a bit much to me, but it's still alright & does have a good message behind it. Strong anthology.

I always thought this was pure comedy like Scary Movie, but it's actually a horror anthology movie. Featuring stories centered in the black community, it covers some heavy subject matter, yet there are some comedic moments sprinkled in too.

Seen: 2. I rented this on VHS twice as a kid, because this was my first experience with a horror anthology.

3rd story with the dolls was nice, the last one could be better if it was not a "A Clockwork Black" rip off. Though I like how it's connected to the final scene. The first 2 stories were pretty lame.

I've heard tons of hype about this movie over the years so I felt I needed to watch this. Now that I've seen it I have to admit that I'm happy I did. Is it as great as people have been saying? Well, no not really but it is fun, fast paced, inventive and occasionally memorable. It plays like an off shoot of the Tales from the Crypt show and is just as good overall. By far the best thing about this is the soundtrack.

Blatant ripoff of the 1972 _Tales from the Crypt_, right down to outright stealing the Peter Cushing story and the framing story
