Anthony Mackie goes into another space and time and immediately kills a butterfly or something and then when he comes back nothing changed but a girl is missing cause she didn't kill the butterfly or something and then they try really hard to conjure up the ethereal imagery from Annihilation and mix it with the visceral fear of cavemen and also marriage is hard.

It's odd to have such a big scifi element, and yet limit it's weight in the story. It tries to give room to the drama and relationship side like some tv series do, but with the runtime of a movie, it is a bit confusing. Leaves one wanting more.

"Synchronic" is now the closest thing to a blockbuster that Benson and Moorhead have come up with, only they've done it without sacrificing an ounce of the fantastical brand of sci-fi that they've made their trademark. This one is a little too slow and the ending is a little too dissatisfying to really impress me, but I think it proves that they can consistently come up with engaging ideas.

Missed opportunity to do something really mysterious and interesting, but which is lost in the search for a missing character, which we have no affection for. Bad script, bad pacing and predictable.

A man without children helps a man with children and learns true values. A film that gets progressively more conventional and predictable as it goes along, giving the viewer less and less reason to pay attention to the intricacies of the unfolding of what is quite a silly premise.

Great opening and some promising ideas perhaps having to do with the pharmacological character of modern consumer tech (w/ Monsef as the contrite-too-late programmer) and the liberating-imprisoning effect on our perception of and interaction with time and history, but the contrived narrative leads to a trite conclusion that seems emblematic of the filmmakers' worst, TED-talkiest instincts (a terminally ill character instructs us that "living now is a miracle"). Mackie is very good. Dornan isn't.

Avid time-travel enthusiasts might be surprised by this gritty feature. While it isn't as technical or cerebral as the rest of its niche, it also doesn't try to cheat the viewer with a panoply of paradox and reality-bending special fx that is common to this genre. There are some nice cinematic surprises (the past periods that are time-traveled to.) The cast delivers strong performances along with some heartfelt emotional swings throughout the film that are resolved tastefully at the end.

Starts off well enough but can't keep it together till the end. Especially when compared to the duos past films, this doesn't shine as they did, but I guess it is a better stepping stone for them to do bigger and better films in the future. But this one especially with the weak ending that doesn't make much sense if the films universe and reverses some things he has done in the past.. Just brings it way down in the end.

Synchronic has a few cool ideas that are undermined by frustratingly bland characters, and a limited overall vision. The film takes 50 minutes to reach the main plot, setting up the drug & characters in a needlessly forgettable & prolonged fashion. Things get more interesting when Mackie has to systematically solve a problem, but the ending feels too contrived and uninspired. Mackie was decent, whereas Dornan was all over the place, though this seems more down to poor direction and writing.

While not as tightly written as Moorhead and Benson's other outings, Synchronic still manages to provide intrigue. They continue to show that they are interested in rather simple stories with extraordinary circumstances. There is a bit too much fluff and too many characters which take away from some of the stakes that could have been had.

I think it tries too hard to get the central idea to work and forgets to add emotional connection and a plot that makes sense.

I've kind of had a love/hate relationship with Bensom+Moore movies. Some of them have been better than others, some worse. Synchronic, for me, was in the middle. The plot is as weird as ever and there are definitely a whole lot of holes in the theory it employs, but the two main characters and the intrique of the different places makes it work. Ending was a bit lukewarm, though.

Interesting concept and enjoyable. I like the story and how it ends, but something about the execution made it feel cheesy.

I enjoy M&Bs films and this is no exception; however, for those (like myself) pulled in w the promise of a sci-fi starring role, you'll be disappointed to learn it is merely a supporting player in a melodrama amongst two paramedic friends. The main idea here would play great as a tv series , but like others have mentioned stuffing all the character drama they wanted to in a 95 min feature left too little to explore the SciFi elements. Still, very good work from Mackie. Glad I watched it. 6.5

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have crafted the most engaging indie cinematic universe since the Viewaskewniverse. While being the most accessible of the three movies, Synchronic is thrilling & suspenseful enough to contend with its ultra mind-bending predecessors. If the notion of a time travel drug seems iffy for you, at least give the movie a go for Anthony Mackie's standout performance, then decide how you feel about the rest.

Anthony Mackie does an amazing job. The concept is fresh and unique and interesting. The negatives include some of the melodrama and a few clumsy contrivances.

Cool ideas floating around in the background of what, sadly, ends up being something of a melodrama. It all too frequently felt like it was on the cusp of something grandiose only to exercise far too much restraint in favor of poring over its characters. Not Benson and Moorhead's best.

Some cool ideas and a unique, dark tone almost save middling characters and a disjointed plot. The mystery elements should have been the star of the show, and nothing ever hits a crescendo.

An enormous disappointment coming from the authors of two of my favorite movies (Resolution, The Endless) It's a below-average sci-fi with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Concept is just silly for me, but the execution kind of saves some of the nonsensical stuff and makes it pretty watchable. Too bad it all seems so clumsy and it finally embraces the sci-fi, time travel arc.

not at the heights of Moorhead and Benson’s past efforts, but a fun concept executed with adequate emotional heft and very little fat. Mackie’s charisma is the spine, but the clever execution and confidence in depicting the fluid logic of its high concept elements keeps it fun and fresh.
