I know the whole point is that the Stones stuff stands as a greater symbol for all the politics of the time, but watching "Sympathy for the Devil" come together in the studio is easily the most interesting part of the film. The rest of it is like being stuck in a lecture.

The political commentary, which is like 90% of the film, is so wanky as to be an effective self-satire. The other 10% is Keith Richards staring off into space while smoking cigarettes.

Godard's playfulness and wonderful use of colour is there, along with a nice temporal rhythm with the music and the intercut political segments that are exactly what you'd expect, a bit preachy very literary and slightly hollow. I enjoyed the moments, but it doesn't come together. I don't really get any kind of consistent throughline or connection between the segments beyond "it's the late 60s." I think a big part of this film's strength is formalistic, but it doesn't engage me on that level.

An amalgamation of gorgeously shot in-studio footage of the Rolling Stones working on "Sympathy for the Devil" and head-scratching political vignettes of varying quality. I understand what Godard's going for (the original title, One Plus One, does a nice job of putting it into some sort of perspective) and some of the fictional scenes are interesting, but quite frankly, the connection isn't strong enough, and the Stones scenes are just way more interesting.

alternates long takes of rolling stones band practices with long takes of various philosophical and revolutionary setups, and also throws in intermittent background monologue by some british dude. the continuous variations on the titular song are fascinating, the film is structured to give us a breath between heavy political discussions, and the narration is at times quite amusing. nonetheless the relation between the three threads is tenuous at best and on the whole it's pretty nonsensical.

Godard's motivations are admirable but the result certainly is not. As a Stones fan, I thought the footage of the evolution of 'Sympathy for the Devil' was fantastic, but it only makes up part of the film. The rest is complete wank, albeit very nicely shot.

The Stones' parts of this are reveletory. I'm less a fan of the Marxist garbage slotted between the Stones' segments.

If it wasn't for the Stones, I would give it a lower score.

DVDRip no MakingOff.
