When Lords Asano and Kira fight in the Shogun's castle, Asano is put to death while Kira gets no punishment. Asano's remaining men wait and plot for years to get their revenge on Kira. It's Fukasaku's take on the classic tale of the 47 loyal ronin, a true story that had already been filmed at least 3 times before. It's got a huge cast, massive sets, and beautifully detailed period costumes. A high quality samurai drama that builds tension slowly towards a fantastic climactic battle.

This was the most lush and grand version of the film I've seen but it also had some weird pacing which made it hard to keep track of the passing of time which other versions did much better.

Yet another take on the Japanese cultural staple "The Tale of the 47 Ronin" (and yes, it's a historical event that really happened and has since become an iconic event, fitting the Japanese sense of honour, duty and near-unquestioning subservience to those in authority). Sumptuously done, and if enhanced Hollywood style, it's not easy to spot. It may have been filmed many times but this is an excellent versiom.

It's long, talky and convoluted but it's also incredibly well made and gorgeous so, for me, it's a mixed bag.
