The 1940 RKO version of Swiss Family Robinson (1940) becomes too claustrophobic with the glitz and glamor of it's studio environment to be the free adventure it's supposed to be. Thomas Mitchell as the head of the family is alright and the only one that understands the spirit of the story. The rest act if they're still in their upper-class dining room. Has it's moments with it's storm and inner conflicts, but it's not the ultimate adaptation of Johann David Wyss' writings.
