Sweet Land

Great chemistry between romantic leads. Low-key positive portrayal of farming immigrants. Slow-burn simple charm. Elizabeth Reazer is enchanting--you'll know her as Shirley from Netflix's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, perhaps.

The chemistry between the two main characters is the best part of the movie. The beginning was slow and disjointed. Once the actual story started, the speed picked up a little but not much. By the time things were getting really interesting, the movie ended.

A real breath of fresh air, an American indie-movie without all the indie-isms and directed with a remarkably well-developed style that isn't overbearing. They could have done a little more with the prejudice/alienation angle --as it is, it sometimes comes across dramatically rigged in a Von Trierian not-good way.

A very warm, beautiful, and enjoyable movie. It's easy to tell that a lot of heart went into it. With a perfect cast and emotional beats that are hit like tuning forks, Selim does a terrific job. It is its own film, and doesn't try to be anything besides a story, a very good one at that.

John Heard deserved a best supporting actor nomination for his role as the conflicted and very human minister. Interesting cinematography and sound track that fit the story well. Well-cast, well-acted and well-directed film.
