Sveto mesto (A Holy Place, 1990) is based on a literary classic, Nikolai Gogol's 1835 short story, 'Viy'. However, Kadijevic uses it only as a starting point for his own explorations into the dark side of eroticism. Very different interpretation of Viy to the 1967 version. It's more of a low key mood piece with blatant eroticism that was only hinted at before and features flashbacks explaining the witch's past and dark psychology which seem unnecessary and dispels some of the mystery. It also lacks the visual invention of the Soviet film as well as its off the wall style and eccentric humour. Nonetheless, Kadijevic's approach is subtly creepy, and it's an interesting companion piece with a view of its own.
