Surrogate Woman

A Yi-period drama where dead ancestors are as iron-fisted with the elders as the elders are with the young. Rules and restrictions mostly rooted in superstition seem ever-flowing, as her socioeconomic status forces a virgin peasant girl into surrogacy for a noble family hellbent on producing a male heir. The film stresses the inhumanity of such norms, but is devoid of manipulation - keeping straightforward, clean and simple instead. It's emotive but suitably distant to avoid melodrama.
