Chinn adapts her own teenagerhood into a well-written, if occasionally melodramatic, film that delivers convincing emotional responses to an extraordinarily difficult situation. Parker does a good job portraying naivety and grief, set against Linney as the mother whose grief has turned her borderline abusive. The focus on the high school life provides balance to what would have otherwise been a very dour film. A little clichéd at times and thematically light, but very watchable.

Parker is great here, handling the heavy material wonderfully. Linney handles being a grieving mother well and Harrelson, even though he's not in it a ton, adds a lot of warmth to the story. A tragic tale where you basically know how it's going to end, but that doesn't stop the finale from hurting real bad. Emotional but even funny in a few places. Suncoat's authenticity does justice to Chinn's own experience. Can't say I LOVED it, but it's solid from beginning to end and that's okay.
