On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson" when Captain "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career. Feels like way too much drama was injected into this real-life story to make it Hollywood worthy. Also, much more than the miraculous story about survival, we're exposed to something interested in presenting a subtext gripped with paranoia (in a 9-11 discourse if that makes any sense, the release date supports this), as if the American way of life was threatened because of this crash landing. At one point, I thought Eastwood was going to hint that the birds might have had Al-Qaeda connections.

Serviceable true story about a week's news headline seven years prior. Eastwood is a far better director than most actors turned directors, but that's the only exceptional thing about this. I can't really say there could have been a better movie made out of this, but it turned out meh anyway.

Viewed September 10, 2016. This is the first movie that has made me tear up in a long, long time. I'm typically a pretty stoic, analytical film watcher (a bit of a Clint Eastwood type, actually), but something about this film's straightforward and old-fashioned honesty broke me down - "No one is going to die today." It's the kind of brilliant movie that is nominally about one person and one event, but grows to something far greater. It's an imperfect movie, but an easy one to like.

To be honest, I'm surprised Sully ended up as good as it is. The Miracle on the Hudson is such a small event that making a full-length movie seems tough; however, Eastwood somehow makes it work, even with this nonlinear telling. Hanks does a good job as the titular pilot, and Aaron Eckhart turns in a great performance as his first officer. The investigative team is given a slightly unfair treatment, which unfortunately makes the film a bit more cliched; however, on the whole Sully is a success.

Eastwood's Sully is a deeply humanistic movie in the best possible way. It underlines what most of us already know intuitively: that as marvelous as the machines we've constructed may be, there's still a place for human instinct. For experience. For clear-headed judgment unalloyed by algorithms and protocol. For gut.(pluggedin.com)

I'm like 100% certain that everybody in the world thinks this guy's a hero, and if there was any bureaucratic, red tape he had to go through, it was only procedural. It's like making a movie about the baseball team that dominates the regular season, then sweeps its way to a world series, and focus on the fact that they had problems with their ticket vendors. Or me with the fact that Rob Schneider exists.

Obnoxiously self-appreciating, and transparently pandering (an hour and fifteen minutes in until someone verbally references 9/11), 'Sully' relies on repetitious scenes and flashbacks to compensate for the fact that, as heroic as the real-life pilots were, there really isn't much of a story to tell here.

Except for the plane crash scenes, the first 2/3 feels like a made-for-tv movie telling you very little you didn't already know & making you wonder What's the point? But the last 1/3 is both a brilliant illustration of the kind of bureaucratic, economic, & corporate thinking that expects humans to react to life & death scenarios like they were reading from a manual & a moving tribute to the irreplaceable power of decades of experience & the many uniformed heroes liberals judge from behind desks.

Disgustingly American. It's basically propaganda for the pilots, firefighters, policemen and ship captains involved in the situation depicted. A ridiculous amount of time is spent on flashbacks, only to show and glorify every single person there. I agree that these people did something good, but why should I give a crap? The movie should've answered my question by making the story engaging, the characters interesting, the tension palpable. Instead, we have a movie with zero urgency.

When a movie lacks a story worth telling, a protagonist with any depth, any forward momentum whatsoever, a supporting cast that doesn't resemble a garden of pet rocks, and enough substance not to necessitate substantial filler, it isn't a good movie. It can be based on an inspirational and real feel-good event - one whose 200 seconds are faithfully recreated - and it still won't be a good movie. It tries to create drama from thin air, but doesn't have the imagination to create even a modicum.

The action is fine, but Hanks has the only character with a displayed personality, and since they say right up front that everyone lives, all we're waiting to find out is "Did he make the 'right' decision, and how much trouble is he in?" We needed to see more people's fleshed-out perspectives ala "Apollo 13" (the traffic controller was good).

Add in Clint Eastwood as the director and this is a tailor made film with a grounded central premise that will allow you to be both entertained and learn a few things too. The mark of a good film is that you are still gripped by it, even if you know what happens. Sully is an undramatic dramatisation, and a pleasure to watch because of that. Understated, informative and enjoyable. Sure it could have branched out in various directions to explore different sub stories, but Sully keeps to the point, tells the story, and is 90 minutes of absolutely brilliant acting by Hanks. You can see behind his eyes the conflict between absolute conviction and self doubt. Masterful.

Anemic, disjointed drama is an inexplicable misfire on all fronts -- Eastwood's direction lacks the urgency required for the disaster sequences, and his telling of the background story is muddled and confusing, not helped by Komarnicki's screenplay which utilises an overly complicated, disorienting flashback structure. Hanks gives a rare disengaged and dull performance, and Eckhart and Linney are completely wasted.

I'd heard all the criticism about it (repetitive sequences, the board portrayed as harsh bastards, etc.) and whilst they are valid, I think it's what makes this good. Hanks is terrific and I think it's one of Clint's more controlled films. We all know what happened and that he's a hero, but the fact that the film still makes you wonder keeps you engaged, and the triumph of human nature is always great to see.

One of the most unambiguously heroic figures of the century so far gets an understandably fawning commemoration. Could have been a little less on the nose at the end, but it's not really typical inspirational filmmaking. It's a simple story spread very thin; meandering and moody, with that mystical edge Eastwood excels at. Hanks is so commanding that had the film not taken such pains to "zoom out" it might have felt like an exercise in narcissism. Ends too abruptly.

Sully can feel disjointed and strange due to its inability to tell a straight story, yet it still feels like average Oscar-bait. Hanks and Eckhart are perfectly cast, and Clint Eastwood, as usual, brings his A-game to the direction. There are just some serious script problems. This has me thinking Sully is a good contender for the acting Oscar categories, but I'd be surprised to see it anywhere near Best Picture.

We have once again a "Bridge of Spies" but this time with an Eastwood at the director seat. What makes this film really unbearable is the lack of enough substance which could create a tense and dramatically conflicting movie. Its so obvious that Sully is the perfect American father that no "constructed" obstacle can push us at the opposite belief. One positive aspect may be Eastwood's narration where he uses "memory" and remembrance surprisingly powerful and functional. A cliche moral tale.

There was hardly a story here to tell - often times much of the drama felt forced and slammed in without really going anywhere. They repeat scenes from the crash way too much and the whole film felt disjointed on the complications it wanted to talk about. The court scene at the end was intriguing and there were some good moments there, but the buildup to it was extremely dull and the movie ends awkwardly on a joke.

While this may not be Hank's most demanding role, I think it will certainly be one of his most memorable, along with "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Private Ryan". And Eastwood met the challenge of telling the truth of the story in an engaging way without loosing the audience in tedium or BS. In Eastwood's 4000th remake of SERGEANT YORK, the Germans are the National Transportation Safety Board. Things are getting weeeird. Really is one of the oddest recent "big" films. Punchy shameless strawman tone poem. The hatchet job is obvious from Gunn & O'Malley's first scene: for what they're trying to do, their approach makes no sense. Eastwood is very good at eliciting sympathy for ordinary men who are just doing their jobs. Coming from autobiographical material, the movie understands that Sully isn't a hero -- he's a man who trained for such an occasion and acted appropriately. but as he isn't a hero, he can't have an arch-nemesis, and forcing the NTSB into the role of antagonist in what is ultimately a story of self-reflection leads to an uneven story that feels overlong even at 90 minutes.

Eastwood continues his wizened "get off my lawn!" approach to filmmaking and protagonists. Here he believes that a human element is something that can't be recreated "in a video game", and has our hero fight against that. But he's given a great biography--as well as a wonderful Tom Hanks performance. Captain Sully's competency, humanity, and conflict are warm & approachable. It ends a bit too suddenly, but that is a minor complaint. This would make a great retirement home screening!

This was surprisingly good. I could see all the emotional manipulation going on & it was quite saccharine, but damn, it worked on me. I found myself getting pretty emotional at some points. I liked the structure & they managed to stretch a story with not a lot to tell in a way, into a compelling & interesting movie. Hanks is great, of course, even though his character isn't terribly complex, but I think that's the point. Eastwood is clearly interested in the notion of the American hero.

When it's based on true events, I enjoy hero stories where the hero and filmmaker are reluctant to make him out to be some demigod of flawless virtue. In that sense Sully is a success. Captain Sullenberger is acted and filmed with a grace that bucks the trend of how I've come to expect American hero stories in this day and age. Even the emergency landing is filmed with an almost serene calmness that both fits and is quite remarkable.

Dramas based on real events can always be a bit tricky. Some events are dramatised, some to an annoying level (with the villainous investigation team - oh no) and it can all feel a bit heavy-handed, especially in the earlier scenes. However, if you take yourself away from this and immerse yourself in the story that's being told and Hanks' performance, it can still be a pretty thrilling ride. Sully takes a thrilling but short lived moment in history and remarkably manages to build a feature length story around it. The centre piece event is obviously the most entertaining element of this film. But the aftermath is interesting and seamlessly real performances from Tom Hanks & Aaron Eckhart give this story real gravitas. The pacing is somewhat disruptive and personally I think the story should have been told chronologically. But otherwise this is well made film by Clint Eastwood.

Hanks does fine work in the role of Sully, a brave airline pilot whose emergency landing in the Hudson river was a heroic feat that saved many lives and brought great scrutiny upon him. Eastwood focusses on the private doubt that engulfs Sully when he is subjected to investigation for his actions which were initially viewed as reckless. The incident is relayed in fragments, vis a flashback structure, which heightens the tension but flattens the drama. It's well made but lightweight.

Sully (2016) An excellent bio-pic of the events of Nov. 14, 2014, "Sully" employs the back-story of the hearings by the FAA and the NTSB with both real-life footage and re-enactments of those same events. Director Clint Eastwood weaves an interesting story where one stays focused and involved. Very fine acting by Tom Hanks (Capt. Chesely "Sully" Sullenberger), Aaron Eckhart (as first officer Jeff Skiles), Laura Linney (Lorrie Sullenberger, the pilot's wife) and a good supporting cast h

Yeah, I can get behind this one. Even though Laura Linney literally spends every scene isolated on a phone, and there's a little too much repetition, Sully solidly depicts the consequences of the historic landing without any rah-rah patriotism or sentimentalism. Hanks is able to remind us he's an A-lister without any melodramatic Oscar reel moments. There's a profoundness in his eyes throughout the entire movie. I have never been disappointed by Tom Hanks. This movie about true events obviously limited the possibilities but nevertheless, there is a great story told here. However, I was not nearly as fond of the circus-like ending that basically highlights all the awful and ignorant people who second-guessed his heroic decisions. Excellent acting, production, and music. Worth watching.

Look at those baddy baddy investigators! What a horror! Those blood thirsty government bastards! Save yourself the trouble and watch an episode of Air Crash Investigations on Nat Geo if you like airplane stuff.

By the numbers biopic is good enough to spend the time.

W3E1P1S0V1M1A1R1. I think people were so surprised that this 2 minute event could supply a feature film, they applauded even a small semblance of a story. I thought the whole thing was a joke, if a well-made one. The investigation team weren't just villains; they were a team of bumbling, stoic idiots. And the big "payoff" at the end just flops from every angle--plausibility, satisfaction, emotional impact, you name it. Every scene with Laura Linney was cringe worthy and superfluous. Man.

You know what you're getting when you watch this. It's not great but it's a safe, watchable movie

This is an above average TV drama propelled by having one of the greatest actors in the title role. The 96 minutes runtime is achieved by showing "the miracle" again and again and adding some silly movie clichés. Still an easy watch though.

Decent pacing and a believable performance by Tom Hanks don't make up for the unfocused direction and god-awful dialogue thrown about in this disappointing biopic.

It's a sap-fest, to be sure, but I've endured far worse. But definitely turn it off before the credits... that scene with all the survivors thanking the real Sully is uber-sap. It's like that disgusting final scene of Schindler's List, except--thankfully--not as long. Laura Linney was, unfortunately, not given enough to do to redeem this.

It's a great story, but it could have been a 10 minutes short film. Everything before and after the landing is just not interesting.

A straight forward story, only made interesting by the fact of flipping the script. The portrayal of the NTSB is sad, added to create conflict, but not an awful film after all. Hanks and Eckhart are great.
