Suite Francaise

This film has the opposite problem to a similar European war-era romance piece "Birdsong". Whereas the story of former was solid, the leads were miscast. Here it's the other way around. Cast is brilliant to every minor character. But the story is clumsy and bare-boned. Considering it was written by a literary layman, it's no wonder. I like the theme, but it doesn't much delve into any depths except proclaiming that war is horrible and not all people on the opposing side are horrible.

Interesting and engaging story set in occupied France. The love story plays a secondary role to the way the petty squabbles of the villagers become catalysts for disaster in wartime. The film doesn't judge the characters and generally you see each characters strengths and weaknesses.

Good and engaging, shame they are trying to change history and act like the french actually resisted. History fans unite and are disappointed in this film. Still a nice romcom though with lovely classical music

Takes a thankfully different narrative avenue to the book, but doesn't improve on its lacklustre impact. The characters, setting and situations in this story are incredibly generic and bland. Any of them could easily be lifted from another WW2 movie or transplanted into one. It still wouldn't make me care. The French peasant woman and Nazi soldiers are all far too beautifully coiffed and groomed to make you think there was a war on. The most forgettable wartime chick-flick you'll ever see.

A grim nature, a tragic romance and accurate period detail make this one a very engaging drama.

Love and war collide. Surface-level stuff, but it mostly works quite well. I guess that if you like this kind of WW2-era period drama, you'll see through the flaws; if you don't, they'll just be magnified.
