If anything, colder than THE CONFORMIST, lacking its obvious cinematic virtues, and lumbered with a protagonist-without-qualities. But its tapestry of cinema, literature, painting and opera commands attention with an uncanny power that only intensifies in the aftermath.

Like The Conformist, this is another brilliant Bertolucci film about Fascism. This one deals with an Italy struggling with its past, rewriting it -- or reliving it -- when necessary. Bertolucci weaves an intricate web, transitioning effortlessly between the present and flashback, sometimes even bleeding one into the other. Alida Valli steals the show, with her unique blend of warm and disturbing. Storaro's photography is magnificent, loaded with stunning images and thoughtful compositions.
