Stone Turtle

It has a great moodiness to it, a real sense of an enchanted reality interspersed with a very harsh one. I really liked how they structured the story and how it unfolds while giving the remoteness of the island and also maybe a very in-your-face demonstration of what "dispossessed" really means. This is what I look for when watching movies from different countries, a set of senses that is unfamiliar a glance of a world completely different; this film is very satisfactory inthis sensE.

A stock standard revenge film with some supernatural elements thrown in to keep it interesting, but which is mostly just shallow symbolism (i.e., semiotically deficient). At risk of seeming to be in poor taste, I'd rather watch a film about Mia's exploits to fabricate a ruler to give her husband the impression that his erect penis is bigger than it actually is in structure and function. However, Asmara Abigail as Zahara is beguiling and the animations by Paul Williams are lovely.
