Great prison film -- it's not the smartest and it has a very simple plot, yet this may be one of more visceral of the sub-genre. The conditions of the prison and the treatment from the guards is cruel, tough, uncompromising, and utterly violent (yet the portrayal of the prisoners themselves is rather tame, they get along with each other like they're boys in a playground). The last quarter of this film (the riot) is absolutely brilliant cinema and will leave a scar in your mind.
