Interesting, tragic and frustrating. Very hard to understand Stevie, and trying to see through his flaws is hard. But I couldn't help to feel some sort of sympathy towards him, when he showed his emotional side that he tried so hard to suppress. It wasn't enough however to excuse him for the horrific thing he'd done.

A humanizing spotlight set on the trashiest of white trash. Worth the watch even though it got a little stale after a while.

Steve James summed America with Hoop Dreams, and in the spirit of hoops, he "proves it" with Stevie. H-O-R-S-E, bitch. The ostensibly contrasting urban and rural settings are proven similarly harrowing. Here, James points his bullshit penetrating camera at the rarely seen underbelly of America. The in-bred hicks and grade school drop outs. An intimate character study of the highest order.

Steve James tears down the wall between filmmaker and subject, creating an intensely honest and revealing study. The movie could have used more judicious editing, however, and occasionally feels very repetitive.

Interesting subject in spite of the lifeless narration.

Almost a '90' if it wasn't for the director's baby powder dryness...but his taste is impeccable...

Really fascinating documentary that is as much about James as his former little brother, Stevie. Serves as a blueprint for how to turn a child into an adult monster, quite frankly.
