Romance, Drama
1h 44m
Everyone deserves a chance to follow their dreams, but some people only get one shot. Tyler Gage is a rebel from the wrong side of Baltimore's tracks -- and the only thing that stands between him and an unfulfilled life are his dreams of one day making it out of there. Nora is a privileged ballet dancer attending Baltimore's ultra-elite Maryland School of the Arts -- and the only thing standing in the way of her obviously brilliant future is finding a great dance partner... Another movie where a troubled kid finds his place through an activity, in this case dance, and teams up with a privileged girl that's missing something from making her dancing truly stand out. Step Up blends all styles of dance, like ballet, modern and hip-hop, with a realistic plot of the struggles of trying to follow one's dream. Outside of the dancing, the characters face daily struggles that anyone can relate with growing up and trying to find a place in this crazy world.

There frankly aren't as many dance scenes as you would hope for (or even assume there would be) in this kind of movie, and the ones that are there never really reach the level of being especially impressive.

If any film could ever be called "predictably formulaic" it's this one; a talented cast (dance-wise and otherwise) do their best to bring some distinction, and Tatum and Dewan do have a nice, relaxed chemistry together which keeps the film mildly engaging. The dance sequences are fun, if never particularly memorable; an out-of-left field gang violence subplot feels like a sledgehammer killing a fly in order to introduce some surrounding drama!

An above-average cast can't save this utterly familiar and predictable bad boy meets good girl bore.

Step away from the screen. Step up into a plane and go to Dubai. Take a step towards your next goal. Step into the tub. Follow the steps on your shampoo bottle.

İzlerken her şey bilindik gibi gelmesine rağmen sıkılmadan bitiriliyor. Genel havası 80'li yılları anımsatıyor başarısını da büyük ölçüde buradan alıyor. Diğer taraftan son zamanlarda sıkıntısı çekilen dans filmlerinin eksiğini de tek başına kapatıyor.

This movie is... not good. However it has probably gained at least 10 points since the emergence of Channing Tatum as a legitimate comedy actor. It adds a light sheen of incredulity and hilarity to the otherwise nearly unbearable mid 00s cliches and costumes.

It might be the epitome of trite and brainless for many; I was engaged, most of the movie is passable and the final performance is worth the price of admission.

If you in general don't mind Channing Tatum, dance-movies and predicable chick-flicks, this will work for you... With that in mind it's recommendable.

You know the story. Tough street hood is dragged kicking and screaming into an artistic world, but he slowly starts to learn to respect art and the work that the people around him are doing. He starts working with a beautiful, rich, extremely uptight girl who hates him at first but can't deny the smoldering tension.

Guilty secret, I liked this film! It's a little formulaic but has some realism (gang crime) which wouldn't make it through the usual sweetness filter. A gentle, hopeful film which has a solid soundtrack, some good urban dance (if that's your thing) and a solid if not unique plot. Quite watchable and the makings of some decent actors in the lead roles.

Channing Tatum is probably the only redeeming feature of this movie. I thought the dancing was crap.

The first movie out of the four part movie series. It was weird to see Channing Tatum as a dancer but he was really talented at b-boying.
The movie itself is pretty cliche. Tatum gets in trouble at an arts school. He has to do community service. He gets noticed dancing and joins up with the lead girl in her ensemble. Then the usual chick flick things start up. The break up and then make up.
So the movie wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't great. The sequels are better for sure.

I used to really, really love it a few years ago. I'd probably hate it now, but I'll give it points for the nostalgia.

If your satisfied by some average dancing and crap music you'll loves this. If want a film that isn't cliche rubbish, then give this a swerve. Simply put this is utter garbage.

This is a "chick" flick that no chick will see. Better off not watching this flick. A bollywood flick might be a better watch as opposed to this.

A simple story and I saw 1 good dance-scene at the end.

You know when you're dragged to a chick flick with your girlfriend, and she's even laughing at the idiocy of the serious parts... that's a bad sign. This was a waste of film.

If I wanted to watch dancing, I would go to the ballet, at least that has better plot than this piece of junk.

About as unoriginal as a plot could be. This movie could be toned down a tiny notch and make a perfect Disney Original.

This young cast is surprisingly good, leading me to forecast some bright futures. The soundtrack is also a winner, both for musical quality and it's ability to keep the film moving along.

Like a choreographed dance piece, this one goes through all of the steps, but every move it has, we've seen before performed by other, better dancers. My recommendation, if you absolutely must see it, is to wait for video, where your thumb can bust a move of its own pressing the fast-forward button whenever the characters' lips start moving
