Stella Maris

I really liked this movie. It's shot well, Pickford is fantastic, it had surprises and threw emotional punches. I'm giving it credit for all of that, forgiving the ending just a little this time.

Very nicely shot, but subtle about it, with fine and appropriate lighting, the famous split-screen scenes, etc. (the final shot pulling away from the protagonists was also a pleasant surprise). A great setup for Pickford to show off her range in these sorts of roles, between the two characters and the advancing maturity called for by the plot. The plot itself is a fairly engaging (if extremely contrived) bit of tragic sentimentality, though it's hard to say what to think of the resolution.

Pickford gives a good performance, but what starts out as an interesting moral quandary contrasting her two characters ends up a muddled mess of forced romance and many awkward narrative implications.

It's pure fluff, but entertaining fluff. It's very well done and Pickford shines in her double role.

Interesting movie I must admit, though I don't know yet what to make of it. Good performances on all behalves, especially Mary Pickford is absolutely great in her roles of Stella and Unity.
