Both terrible and fantastic. Steel is so awful, but so enjoyable. There might be no superhero film that you'll get as many laughs from as this. Plus, Annabeth Gish gives a legitimately good performance as Sparky, who happens to be a well done character with awesome superhero abilities.

I remember watching this a lot on the movie network way back yonder , and have apparently repressed 95% of it. There's nothing more 90s than a lady in a wheelchair. Zero momentum to STEEL - things happen and Shaq is so comically large around anything. I just finished this and I couldn't tell you anything about it really, it just happened to me and I'll be in the shower

What the hell, why does my Roku have ads? Why is it showing a really weird low-budget car insurance commercial? Why does that dude look like Shaq? Why is he dressed like Robocop?

This is very bad. Shaq trying to act again, in scenes bizarre and totally cliche.

Bland, by-the-numbers action film is fun for young kids, but not much else. Shaq is terrible, as could be expected from an athlete-gone-actor. Villain is not very menacing. Only vaguely resembles the Superman comic.

It's a cheesy movie, that's sometimes entertaining with its camp.

Embarrassing. I'm writing this review as I finish it so it's 2 minutes I don't have to watch. Shaq and Gish try their best but one is pitiful and the other is just out of place. The bad guy is awful. The soundtrack is cringeworthy. This is 1997 but feels at least 3 years less modern.

Maybe this is a bad time to be making this case, but this was the first Black superhero movie and for my money much more entertaining than Black Panther, with high camp, real explosions, inner city landscapes and an anti-military message instead of a gross pro-military, pro-monarchy message.

More silly than really bad, per se. Shaq does have a certain charisma. Lots of good moments.

Former Army scientists (Shaquille O'Neal, Annabeth Gish), one in a steel suit, team up in Los Angeles against another (Judd Nelson) who turned bad.

Shaq as John Henry Irons is simply the greatest superhero performance I have ever seen or will see. In a age where our superheros kill thousands and destroy cities, hearing a hero say "Not killing the enemy? Yes ma'am I do like that" is such a breath of fresh air. It also has a boy say "CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME CREAM GET THE MONEY DOLLA DOLLA BILL Y'ALL" Does TDK have that? I don't even think that idiot Nolan has listened to the Wu Tang Clan. Fuck Nolan

This movie wasn't painful to sit through, but it was very bland and forgettable. The story is bad, the acting isn't very good, the suit sucks and even the action scenes aren't particularly interesting. Overall, this isn't the worst superhero movie I've seen, but its probably the blandest.

Man, I love Shaq. He seems like such a cool dude. I'm really glad he gave up acting, because movies like this and Kazaam are just embarrassing. Stick to b-ball man!

I don't know what could have gone wrong. Shaq spouting one-liners and fighting Judd Nelson while wearing an amazing "steel" rubber suit. Seems like a perfect formula to me. Hmm... I'll just blame quality film for why Steel is no good, because they're um... polar opposites to eachother. Utter crapulence.

If there is any confusion on why this movie failed, then I don't know what to say. There are so many reasons why this movie sucks. Shaq + bad dialogue + bad "steel", but obviously rubber suit = score of 10/100. 10 points for Shaq admitting in the film that he sucks at free throws.
