Starsky & Hutch
2004
Comedy, Crime
1h 41m
Set in the 1970s in a metropolis called "Bay City," this is the tale of two police detective partners, Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Wilson), and Dave Starsky (Stiller), who always seem to get the toughest cases from their boss, Captain Dobey, rely on omniscient street informer Huggy Bear (Dogg) and race to the scene of the crimes in their souped-up 1974 Ford Torino hot rod, telling the story of their first big case (as a prequel to the TV show), which involved a former college campus drug dealer (Vaughn) who went on to become a white collar criminal (Electra plays Hutch's girlfriend). I really tried to like Starsky & Hutch but I just couldn't get into it. It was grating and inconsequential, with a large portion of its running time just not mattering. If it was mostly funny, I wouldn't have cared, but since it failed to make me laugh more than twice over 101 minutes, I can't say it succeeded in being a good comedy. Even the "buddy" part of this buddy comedy -- the most routine, formulaic part of the genre -- fails at working properly, or even at all.

Look if you have high hopes for this film, then blame yourself. Vaughn is funny in his heavy-sarcasm billian role, and Wilson and Stiller have their moments too. Overall though there was a lot of this film that was plain garbage. The mistake cocaine scene with Stiller can't even sniff Chris Katan's Corky Romano performance (yes I went there). I did enjoy Stiller's continued attempts to be respected, pulling his gun prematurely and paying for hit more than once. Don't expect a real story.

I originally heard that this movie happened because Stiller is a huge fan of the original series. Maybe not that much, though, because their characters aren't even anything like the original ones. This has a couple of laughs, but it lacks the warmth and charm of the original series.

Some amusing scenes, but overall disappointing, especially after Zoolander showed that Stiller and Wilson can be a fine comic duo. The film feels like a hodge podge of things that may have been funny in isolation, but don't really gel together to make an entertaining film. Also, Stiller's "Do it" character, one of the funnier bits, is just lifted from his old sketch comedy show and so, to me, felt a bit stale.

Not even Har Mar Superstar can breathe life into this liquified turd of a movie. They remade a TV show no one wanted to see as a movie into a movie and totally killed whatever credibility the show had just so actors doing ten movies a year like Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn could get another paycheck. Yay.

Fairly trashy 70s pastiche from some of the most overworked comic actors in Hollywood. I'd rather have one truly worthwhile film from Stiller, Wilson, Vaughn and so on than 3 disposable mediocrities a year.

Sure its not Zoolander, but I think its a generally fun time. Really the movie hinges on how much you like Stiller, Wilson, and to a lesser degree Vaughn. Personally I think they have great chemistry and do a lot to make this move watchable.

Stiller and Wilson have fun chemistry, but the film is little more than a chance to shoehorn in nostalgic references to the 70's and the TV show it is based off. Vince Vaughn plays a pretty generic villain and the film rides a paper thin plot to some pretty obvious jokes. Even fun supporting appearances from Snoop Dogg and Will Ferrell can't save a film that is merely OK and forgettable.

Pathetic waste of time and money. They have destroyed the Starsky and Hutch franchise. Every joke falls flat. I'm not sure who was worse, Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson, they both totally stunk up the screen. Snoop Dog was also boring. The writing was idiotic and tedious. How do these morons keep getting acting gigs? Vince Vaugh and Jason Bateman must also be embarrassed by this. Nothing much good here except for minor roles for Carmen Electra, Juliette Lewis and Amy Smart. Lame sums it up.

Starsky & Hutch definitely falls into the guilty pleasure category. It's pretty unrecognisable of the TV Series content wise, but the styling is spot on. And Stiller & Wilson make it work. The supporting cast is half decent too. Ferrell in particular is the standout and his one scene is arguably the funniest of film. The jokes are daft and there's not all that much going on, but it's quotable and still makes me laugh. There's definitely fun to be had here and there's a retro likability.

Comedies are tough to rate: they can have funny bits (and so fulfill their function as comedies) without actually being very good movies. There's funny bits in this and the leads are very watchable doing the same old schtick they always do, but it falls flat and I can't even be bothered to figure out my own opinion on why that is.

It's a fun movie that keeps you consistently laughing throughout. Fans of the original series seem to dislike it but I think it's because they made it into a parody of 70s cop movies and TV shows. Wilson and Stiller are great together and Ferrell is hilarious in his small role. I always appreciate Juliette Lewis and Jason Bateman getting work as well. Worth at least one watch.
