Might be the Denis' film I enjoyed the least, and is still striking with its feverish blend of erotic thriller, romance and spycraft where everything matters but the drinking, the smoking, the fucking between these two amidst a country about to dramatically change and engulf them into its political chaos. Flawed, but engrossing. I'd like to revisit some time soon.

this is probably my fav denis film after 35 rhums. i don't know how it's possible for a film to deal with very complicated political problems through a *seemingly* surface-level story of basic human needs & passions. qualley is incredible in a role that's unlike previous denis characters in terms of her disposition. denis philosophizes through her camera, and tindersticks elevate the film's mood once again. it's not always you wanna watch something agan just after it finishes. simply brilliant!
