Thankfully, this movie manages to be more fun than it is stupid (though it's still plenty stupid), placing it firmly in guilty pleasure territory for me. It also helps that I was 13 when I saw it for the first time.

Most certainly Roland Emmerich's best film. It's a fun and enjoyable sci-fi adventure. James Spader is great, as it Kurt Russell who I normally don't find very good. Worth seeing.

Humanity finds a stargate in Egypt that leads them to Egypt 2, where they meet a lizardhorse and some huddled tribe. It's the underwhelming adventure that the idea of pyramid shaped spaceships deserves. On the other hand, while it's no Indiana Jones, good use of characters, main and side, does give a pleasing flow to the whole thing. There, I got through that whole review without mentioning pornography. Confused? Look at the poster. Still confused? Consider the title. Yup. That's my mind for ya.

Holds up pretty well here more than 15 years down the road, mainly due to a wonderful David Arnold score and great design. Manages to mix up archaeology and aliens in a likeable, adventurous rump with both great battles and nuclear detonation... So... like Indy 4, only good.

Wonderfully entertaining bit of sci-fi/action nonsense courtesy of peak Emmerich does a kind of DANCES WITH WOLVES in Egypt, with Spader and Russell having fun trying to out-muscle each other. While it perhaps never surpasses the Shatner STAR TREK efforts (which it clearly tries to emulate), this is still good, light hearted and silly fun.

Emmerich crafted a solid sci-fi thriller, who still hold it's grounds today! Despite the obvious flaws and the strange subplot of KR, Stargate is an entertaining film on the same level as some of it's equals coming out in 2011.

Derivative (of _2001_, _Star Wars_, _Dune_, et al.) but agreeable science fiction. The story stops developing, though, and settles for a Flash Gordon-style evil despot (Ra himself, the Sun God, with a deeper-than-Darth-Vader voice: an even weirder role for Davidson), and settles at the same time for space-opera action and special effects. Russell as the suicidal military commander of the mission and Spader as the civilian "dweeb" are excellent in their separate ways.

Stargate is one of the more original sci-fi adventure films of the 90's, and it rightfully spawned something of a television legacy. Unfortunately, the many television adaptations are not as approachable as the film, which, with a unique story and a solid cast led by Kurt Russel, was a very cool and entertaining feature. Really good!

It's a fun movie with an interesting concept, but one you have to not think too much through. Why Ra needed slaves, couldn't develop tech to do some mining, or cultivate civilization to make his people happy so they wouldn't revolt is uncertain. Also Daniel is the nerdiest nerd stereotype you could find and it all gets a bit silly, especially how he gets the girl in the end as well. I enjoy it, but can also see its flaws.

Nothing spectacular, plus some things didn't make sense... Not that the movie prides itself in the making sense. Anyhow, there is some unexplainable charm in the 90s' cinema. The idea is interesting, the cast is solid and who doesn't love Egypt. However, the actor playing Ra was abysmal. No wonder he didn't have a career in acting afterwards.

Lmao they all go to an alien planet a million light years away and it turns out that it’s… just ancient Egypt, complete with pyramids, humans, similar clothes, etc, just some weird horses and a spaceship there. Spader/Russell team up is definitely a cool game one tho. Never seen 1 episode of any of the million TV show spin-offs / sequels.

It is kind of astonishing that you could take this ridiculous, nonsensical premise and make it into the blandest action film imaginable. The fucking thing ends with a gunfight and a big ole bomb with a red digital display ticking down. Good Lord. Why do aliens who can travel across the entire universe instantaneously need slaves to pile a bunch of rocks on top of each other?

Sort of just reminds me of other, better 90s sci-fi/fantasy that would follow, namely the Fraser Mummy, The Fifth Element, and Event Horizon, with a sprinkle of Dune (the novel) thrown in. It's got all the pieces of something interesting, but doesn't really do much with them.

Original Sci-Fi films may seem like few and far between these days. Especially when they didn't come from an existing franchise. This film however launched a well known franchise and subsequently became a lesser known Sci-Fi schlock film. Roland Emmerich put together a joyfully entertaining action popcorn flick here and started a universe which would eventually gain millions of fans. That alone should be enough to give this movie another shot.

Once you get past the ridiculous idea of aliens building pyramids, it's a decent movie that also serves as a pilot for the much superior SG-1 TV series. And I must say the practical effects hold up amazingly well. If nothing else it holds the distinction of being Emmerich's only halfway decent film, whatever that's worth.

I love cheesy sci-fi and egyptian mythology, so it's like this movie was tailor made for me to enjoy. It was an incredibly entertaining movie back in its day, aged well enough, and spawned the best sci-fi tv show around, so there's no way I can hate on this. The plot is braindead dumb in traditional Emmerich fashion, but I'll allow it.

The pairing of Spader's nerd, and Russell's nails-tough colonel creates the tension against which all the speculations about alien gods in Egypt are played out. Imagine Mc Gyver and Rambo working together to save the bacon of Egyptologists, everywhere - great stuff, if fluff.

Though it tends to get a little dry in places and the pacing starts to tangle up in itself by the second act, Stargate mostly held my interest thanks greatly to Spader, who is endearingly dorky and passionate, and Russell, who is a hard-nosed military man with his cheeky moments by the end; basically splitting Indiana Jones into two characters. A little overindulgent, but still a good time all the same.

Vaguely interesting beginning that quickly lapses into nonsensical plot devices. The fact the script was stolen (sorry, settled out of court) from a PhD student really shows. It's by far the best thing Emmerich has ever done (because it wasn't his story) but that still only elevates it to not-good status. Not as tongue-in-cheek fun as Egyptian romps like The Mummy, and not sci-fi enough to please the nerd audience. It's a very thin plot with a lot of padding and scenes where nothing happens.

Somehow I'm not at all surprised they stole the great premise from someone else. It's wasted on a very generic sci-fi romp featuring some cultural imperialism Queen Victoria would have been proud of. At times the god-awful writing made it physically difficult to keep watching the movie.

I don't think I've seen a movie this bad since Blade II. This one does have a much better premise, though. The beginning is alright but it all goes wrong from the moment the archaeologist/linguist starts making friends with the tribe by offering their leader a chocolate bar. He also miraculously becomes fluent in their language after just one conversation with a native lady. The film is an illogical mess, but at least the nerd gets the girl in the end!

One of the best sci-fi epics in years. A surprise big box-office hit, this seventy-million-dollar U.S.-French coproduction is a lot more complex and intelligent than most modern sci-fi. It makes up for occasional confusing parts through the sheer strength of its fine acting, imaginative direction, and special FX. David Arnold composed the beautiful score; Emmerich directed _Independence Day_ next.

Dull and uninspired sci-fi action/adventure. It feels very dated, and looks more like an expensive TV show than a feature film. From what I remember TV series that it spawned are way better. The movie that started a franchise to rival Star Trek and Star Wars. I am a huge Stargate fan, and this was the movie that started it all. Ancient Egypt / mythology, aliens, amazing technology, space travel -- the elements that comprise this movie, with its great storyline and wonderful character interaction, make for a solid sci-fi romp through a wormhole and into a world of possibilities.
