One of Trek's strongest efforts. The characters are now well established, and often in Trek, they take mysteries in stride and stay at least one step ahead. VI wisely goes boldly into a real unknown: a central mystery and conspiratorial air just outside the characters' understanding. It's a fitting and gripping coda for this crew: "...the native hue of Resolution Is sicklied o'er, with the pale cast of Thought, And Enterprises of great pith and moment, With this regard their Currents turn awry."

More of a political thriller or mystery than sci-fi adventure, which is fine (a lot of the old 'sodes do this) but it gets taken to a point where Kirk literally jumps in front of a sniper's los yelling "Get down Mr. President!" and then Worf shows up to unmask the culprit in a Scooby Doo reveal. General Chang tries way too hard to channel Khan's theatricality. But overall it's a fairly well-written and engaging last voyage for the old guard of the Enterprise.

Now personally I do slightly prefer Wrath of Kahn but Star Trek VI is certainly my second favorite of the Star Trek films. All the regular cast are fantastic, especially Shatner and Kelley, and Christopher Plummer, as General Chang, is amazing, as a bit of a theatre enthusiast I love his taunting Shakespeare quotes, and gives a performance that I believe can rival that of the infamous Khan. Many series end with a sour taste but if you want to see it done just right, then this is it.

Trek is always great at playing with tone: each episode can be a prison show, medical drama, legal procedural, or military action-adventure hour. And this feature film runs with that via a fun channel flipping style that crosses genres. The brand's sci-fi allegory/commentary is top notch as it speculates on how environmental collapse can lead to peace. And the worldbuilding is fun with a good mystery, two quotable villains, and cool looking gadgets. A fantastic way for the franchise to go out.

One of the very best Star Trek movies. There's so much going on in this movie, with such convincingly high stakes, that this is the one TOS movie that truly feels consequential to the rest of the Star Trek franchise. I probably can't separate my feelings for this movie from my Trek fandom, but this has pretty much everything any devoted Trekkie could want from a send-off to the original crew (including Christopher Plummer as one of the series' most memorable Klingon villains ever).

Brush up your Shakespeare, Klingons are quoting him now. So-so political allegory that tries to become a mystery then switch back to a conspiracy plot, with the result that everything gets a bit muddled. Fewer visible production problems, but still clearly done on a tight budget. Gulag planet subplot went nowhere, but the blue-faced alien who battles Kirk did bear a striking facial resemblance to Roger Federer. No interesting, meaningful or likeable female characters, despite Cattrall and Iman.

A nice surprise. The great villain (Plummer), a president with the most laughable hair and beard in history (Kurtwood) and a good addition to the crew (Cattrall) provide a fine foundation. What makes this the most enjoyable of the original ten movies is, however, its mixture of adventure, mystery and a story that actually means something. I would recommend this even for the uninitiated.

A good send-off to the original crew, a decent, though obvious, mystery plot and some decent action sequences. TUC piles on it's cold war analogy with little subtlety and Kirk's racist behaviour towards the Klingons feels a little over the top. Indeed the whole movie flirts with going into all out camp regularly and the mystery is resolved in an almost Scooby Doo fashion. It does give the cast a decent adventure for their last hurrah though.

Probably the second best Star Trek after Wrath of Kahn. Part VI succeeds in blending low stakes antics (prison break) with high stakes politicking. The film is well made and boasts fully formed villains which has been a weak point in the series.

What I've determined after watching all of the Star Trek (original crew) movies again, is that even a subpar Star Trek movie is better than most sci-fi and/or space movies out there. The final voyage of the original crew was another adventurous one. Also, just great seeing that on screen chemistry and comradery again was so much fun. A nice tribute to Roddenberry too.

"And someone get me the collected works of Shakespeare - I've got some quoting to do!" I can't decide if Plummers Klingon general is the most glorious failure or just an underdeveloped shoehorned villain in what was otherwise a very excellent swan song for a sci fi franchise. Well, glorious aside from the akward prison scenes.

Slick and solid further adventure of one of filmdom's science fiction treasures. Hiro Narita's photography is breathtaking, and the script is filled with wit and polish. If you can forgive a few minor holes, the plot is engaging and very entertaining, and the writing is really rather good. now THIS is everything I love about Star Trek in one package. Part Cold War political-thriller, part courtroom drama, part light-hearted adventure film, part anti-racism allegory and part Christopher Plummer reciting Shakespeare while dressed in Klingon make-up and an eye patch, and all the parts end up fitting together so seamlessly. The best Star Trek film and if you've never seen Trek before, one of the best introductions to everything the franchise can offer

This WOULD be Freder's favorite of the TREK movies -- if it didn't go all "Manchurian Candidate" in the final act, and do it in such a low-budget, made-for-TV-movie fashion. Still a fine send-off for the original crew. Would have been even better if Meyer had had his way and Lt. Savvik had turned out to be the saboteur.

I was ready to end my Star Trek movie voyage after The Final Frontier, but I was interested in the sendoff of the original crew. The Undiscovered Country might have been the safest and slowest of the series, but the mystery was decent, there were a few surprises, and the cast got the job done, despite Plummer's all-Shakespeare personality.

A fine farewell for the original cast. I feel like these first films didn’t have enough meat to give their villains. None of them get much of a chance to do anything but wax poetic, and that includes Khan. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but I would’ve liked more than Shakespeare to characterize Plummer in this.

Enjoyable final outing for the "classic" crew feels like a mandated course correction and swing for closure after part 5 - everyone seems a little too world-weary and ready to retire, which does result in faltering pacing from time to time. Ironically gets a shot in the arm from oldest cast member Plummer's gloriously campy Klingon general, and livened by Meyer's terrific action scenes. Caveats aside, a fond and fitting farewell to Kirk & Co.

I could not imagine a more fitting coda for the TOS era of Star Trek. Tells us not to fear the future -- even though it is difficult -- but to embrace it, trust in it, and do everything we can to make it even better. Also, Christopher Plummer as a Shakespeare-quoting Klingon general is something to savor.

This is one of those films that I'm not sure if people love or not, but I've always had a good time with it because of how much of an impact it brings to the series and how important it is for the future of the franchise. This was somewhat political and it makes you think a bit. Plus, I think it allowed for the rest of the characters on the Enterprise to have some important roles. It's pretty decent.

A decent comeback after the godawful Star Trek V but really not great. Attempts a more grounded storyline which is very appropriate but ends up being a tad too simplistic, even for the time and goes a bit overboard with the Russki Klingon Empire. Also doesn't quite find the right tone between all the usual goofiness and relatively serious drama. Still, it's passable as a final adventure of the original crew that leaves a good feeling in you brain.

The Undiscovered Country is a fitting and worthy send off for these timeless characters. The Final Frontier was majorly disapointing but this instalment is a solid return to form and I don't think it could have ended any more appropriately. All of the returning cast members are great but Shatner & Kelley in particular share some of their best scenes together. There's a nostalgic and warm feeling of this series drawing to a close. And after six films of mixed quality, the run ends on a high note.

After the debacle of the last entry, Meyer manages to get things rolling once again with a nice mixture of laughs and suspense. Cattrall is good as Spock's Vulcan protege (originally Kirstie Alley was to have returned as Saavik but things didn't pan out) and although Plummer overdoes it as the eye-patched, Shakespeare-spouting Klingon villain, he's a study in subtlety when compared to Christopher Lloyd in Trek III. Good roles for Takei and Whitney in a nice send-off for the classic cast

I am quite the fan of all things Star Trek, and I like this film quite a lot. There are some flaws of course but these are common to all Star Trek films, such as the Vulcans showing inappropriate emotions (to try and connect with the audience who might not know the Vulcans background). The story is good and there are not too many jokes that fall flat (See Star Trek V) but the thing that annoyed me the most was the Klingon general who only spoke in lines from Shakespear. That got old FAST.

Finally an allegory; a core sci-fi tenant. Not the greatest story but Meyer's sensibilities are able to mold for our stalwart crew a worthy mission that dignifies them and the audience. Kim Cattrall also gives a stellar if under appreciated performance. Low budget but Meyer/Nimoy makes it a good run for the money.
