I was that kid who remembered young Picard from the show had hair and knew immediately this was made for idiots and/or those who don't know Star Trek. Still feels that way. It's an unnecessarily ugly and dark and nasty film that forewarns the Kurtzman era of goth Trek, which has no place in the franchise.

This film was optimistically released on the heels of The Matrix, Unbreakable, and X-Men--pictures that gave legitimacy to sci-fi films previously only enjoyed by nerdy fanboys. But instead, it killed the franchise. It's full of bad Star Wars style C-Span coverage of alien politics, weird flashbacks, and weak action. But the worst part is a horrendous telepathic rape scene. The only reasons to watch are to document the cast horror stories & to see a young Tom Hardy. Otherwise avoid at all costs.

It's not very surprising that this put a stop to the features... and I'm glad that J.J. Abrams' reboot revived the original crew instead, as Picard, Data and Co. simply don't cut it. Hardy looks weird in this.

There's a lot of ingredients for a good movie in this: World-building, character development, an interesting and sympathetic villain, emotional peaks and valleys. a director who knows how to shoot and edit action scenes, and somehow with a lower budget it has higher production values than any other trek film before this, it looks glossy! This is almost a decent film, except the pieces just never quite come together in a polished way, but it's not deserving of nearly as much hate as it got.

Having just finished binge-watching all of TNG, I've decided to tackle the movies. Here's something I never appreciated fully in the past: mothafuckin Tom Hardy! I would say that this is arguably Patrick Stewart's best performance in the four TNG films. Part of that could well be from having a foil the calibre of Hardy, even in 2002. The killing off of Data is I'm sure a sore point for some Trekkies even today. I would have preferred a different send-off for the TNG crew. It is what it is: fine.

Good guys tussle with bad guys. Doppelgänger theme goes nowhere. Probably the emptiest, least interesting of the series, if not quite the worst (that honour goes to GENERATIONS). Baird would never again be given the opportunity to direct. 2016 Update: BEYOND is definitively the worst.

Its so sad to me that the adventures of The Next Generation cast had to end with this abyssmal finale. It's flat and has an unnecessarily tragic ending. Considering this was the final bow for Picard's crew, this film doesn't have any emotional weight.

Oddly harsh and cold farewell to the NG crew has an interesting premise, and a committed performance by Hardy, but its cruel tone and screenplay (including a misbegotten rape scene (?!)) makes it tough going, as if a Roger Moore Bond film had been invaded by Daniel Craig sensibilities. Film still can’t dim the loveable appeal of our heroes (the best ST crew for my money) and while a climactic sacrifice is given short shrift in its execution, the finale packs a quiet, requisite emotional punch.

It's fun to see Tom Hardy as a TNG villain and there are nice action moments, but the atmosphere is just weird and as usual there's nothing for the crew beyond Data and Picard to do. Oh except, for when Troi gets sexually assaulted in a very disturbing way, which was something I didn't need. Thanks to Wil Wheaton for showing up for all of 0,5 seconds to sit at a table.

Tom Hardy's back story is disturbingly similar to Bane's. Surely that must be a coincidence. The film should really revolve around Hardy's plan to get revenge on Romulus. What the hell did Earth do to him? Data has another brother??? Did the film ever explain how Shinzon found him? Picard drives a dune buggy. This should be amazing.

This Star Trek flick is much darker and more serious than most of the other films. There are still some good action scenes especially in the final third with a good/evil battle. A lot of philosophical questions are raised as well that any trekkie should enjoy.

Star Trek: Nemesis is fun thanks to the fact that is is jam-packed with sci-fi action more than any other of the Star Trek films, but it's also quite nonsensical. It's enjoyable to see how the now legendary characters have evolved over time, and it easily draws in Trek fans, but it might be a little stupid and confusing to a new audience. Meh!

Sure, it’s Wrath of Khan again, but I feel it cloaks itself in enough new ideas to stand on its own. I find Trek fans are never satisfied, but though this traversed darker territory, I found it engrossing and fun, if not satisfyingly dumb. Hardy and Stewart are great together.

STAR TREK: NEMESIS is a misguided attempt to bring the franchise into the modern blockbuster era with an overmatched cast better suited for cerebral drama than CGI-powered spectacle. The film mostly eschews TREK's tradition of thoughtful sci-fi, and offers little of interest besides a promising tete-a-tete between Patrick Stewart and a debuting Tom Hardy. Harsh, grim, and dull.

I'm not a big Star Trek fan, so maybe my expectations for Nemesis were low, but I enjoyed it. Patrick Stewart always gives his great performance, and I think this film was a testament to Brent Spiner's work as some of the film's more impactful moments are between Data and B-Four. That said, the whole plot to destroy Earth is a bit convoluted, and I'm never getting that Riker sex scene out of my head.

Nemesis just like its predecessor Insurrection was ultimately the death of the Next Generation films. First Contact set a respectively high standard for the Next Generation films. Sadly though the trend wasn't continued and the overall standard of this film is poor. There's a handful of enjoyable set pieces but it's the loveable and reliable characters that carry this dull film. The highlight though is a solid performance from a young Tom Hardy. Otherwise this film is completely forgettable.

And so arrives the nadir of Star Trek, a film so bad it essentially killed the franchise. The film is the second TNG remake of Wrath Of Khan, this time far more blatant. It's another Picard and Data show, with Picard again wildly out of character. There's plenty of plot holes and Shinzon's motivations seem to change at the drop of a hat. The movie almost seems needlessly violent too as if they felt dark and violent is why First Contact did well. A sad end to The Next Generation.

Not as awful as many make out and while probably not too far off par with the likes of "Generations" and "The Search for Spock", it's nowhere near as bad as "The Final Frontier". That said, this is certainly not one of Trek's finest. The plot is silly and the acting and script worse than its compatriots. There is some nice action, but this film really misses an opportunity to expand on the Romulan's as a race. Strangely enough it does improve with repeat viewings.

In fact I think this will end up a bit like Star Trek VI where it's initially met with mediocre reviews but years later people will really begin to appreciate the film. I liked it, but I can acknowledge that after 2 decades of knowing nothing about Romulans this movie really missed an opportunity. Yes, we learned some things but not enough to satisfy my tastes.
