The comedic tone was a welcome change of pace (and the "flotation device" gag killed me), but the story is very lightweight. Feels like an extended episode of TNG - and not an especially good one. For Trek competists only.

Even when I was ten I took Nute Gunray's line "Your little insurrection is at an end" to be a playful jab at my beloved Star Trek...well twenty years later I'll be damned if I wouldn't rather watch The Phantom Menace than Star Trek: Insurrection. Nice shot, George

I don't know what's up with all the horrible scores on here. Sure Insurrection isn't a masterpiece but it's still good. It feels like simply a longer episode of Star Trek: TNG and I don't think that's a bad thing. The plot's good, the actors are all as good as they are in the series and it's simply an enjoyable Sci-Fi movie.

Rewatching this and the first season of TNG around the same time is surprisingly revelatory: they suffer the same flaws (prioritizing the kind of plodding, archaic sci-fi metaphors and tropes that were starting to get old in Shatner's time, and it looks like they were using another production's stuff second-hand). Picard continues to channel Ahab and it comes off like bad cosplay.

An extended episode of the show. Which wouldn't be so bad, except it's not a very good episode of the show, and we've seen this type of plot multiple times before from the show, so why did this need to be made in the first place? I can only imagine the nineties were an embarrassing time to be F. Murray Abraham.

Breezier entry that improves on the previous two by aiming for a bit of charm and romance, downscaling the story and casting an appealing female lead. The allegorical aspects of the narrative seem, fifteen years on, almost to have appreciated in significance: the good guys are a group with an ambivalent attitude to industrial civilisation, forced by the latter to become refugees and hide out in a mountainous cave system in order to avoid drone strikes! Fizzles, but watchable. Admirably uncool.

Light-weight Trek adventure is frustrating in the short shrift it gives to its weighty philosophical concepts – too much weight is given for them to be dismissed as simple decoration, but they are considered so superficially that the “serious” moments tend to bog the film down, posing questions the film is not prepared to answer. Also serves as a reminder of how good Stewart is in these films – and how much his presence elevates what would otherwise be a pleasant but forgettable outing.

There's some heady concepts here: the automation of warfare, medical ethics, ethnic cleansing and genocide, yet unfortunately none of those ideas were really developed enough to be compelling. Even after two hours on screen, the Sona were still so underdeveloped I was confused as to who they were and what they wanted. Not really a bad film, per se, it's totally watchable, it just feels like the script was half-finished but submitted anyways to get it in before an arbitrary production deadline.

The plot is fascinating, but feels like it runs out of steam and replaces genuine intrigue with boring action. Some of the humor also falls flat. For what feels like an extended episode, it's actually pretty enjoyable.

I got so bored I turned it off halfway through. It isn't cinematic at all, which would be fine if it had half the thought or depth of the TNG episodes it has a lot in common with. Instead it has a load of duff action and really ill judged attempts at humour.

Having just finished binge-watching all of TNG, I've decided to tackle the movies. Frakes at the helm again. In a previous review I dubbed this "an elongated episode". I don't know if that's fair or not. Somehow, despite being two and four years more recent than the previous two TNG films, the CGI in certain places looks markedly worse. And at times Frakes' comedic stylings may be a tad out of place. If the worst thing I can say about this is that's it's a long episode, at least it's a good one!

Very enjoyable sci-fi that is great for Trek fans, but will offer no incentives to newcomers. "Insurrection" is low on action and is instead a plot based film. That plot is just about engaging enough to sustain interest, but only just. There is also quite a bit of unintentional silliness in this film, but take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy.

The story is not nearly grand enough to sustain interest for a feature. It's just an elongated episode, and never really rises above the TV trappings like the better Treks, or even the better TV-to-movie adaptations. It's a decent episode, I suppose, but nothing more than that.

Lackluster! As a long time Star Trek fan, I can easily say this is the worst feature film to date. It wasn't a terrible movie in itself, but it felt more like a long episode rather than a feature. The story simply failed to reach a grand, epic scope that the other series movies dish out.

Initially, I wondered what it was that caused Insurrection's reputation to plummet so, & I assumed audiences were maybe just antsy for something as 'high octane' as First Contact. But while the central mystery is intriguing & I enjoyed seeing it unravel, by the third act, the cracks begin to show. The story overstays its welcome and doesn't quite deliver as much excitement as you'd hope in its final moments — moments that last an eternity (that little trick of Anij's ain't so desirable here).

This is good! Granted, it’s yet another cinematic outing that feels scaled down as if it were a two-parter from the series, but there are a bunch of different touches Frakes provides as director to make it visually stand out. Abraham is a fun villain and the stakes have appreciable ethical depth.

Like so many TV-to-film adaptations, STAR TREK: INSURRECTION lands in that nebulous area between the two mediums, too big for the small screen yet still lacking true cinematic grandeur. However, I'd argue that modesty works well for this particular movie, creating space to appreciate the chemistry of the cast and the unique rhythms of classic TREK storytelling. And aside from an ill-advised action climax, its refusal to pander to modern expectations of big screen sci-fi is quite refreshing.

Hmm...you know, I like a good fountain of youth-themed story, and that's exactly what this is...but the writing is just so...zany. These characters do the same thing they did in Final Frontier. They sang a song...and when they sang the song, there was legitimately sing-a-long lyrics running on the bottom of the screen with a dancing dot so that people can sing along at home...I...I don't get it.

It really would have worked better as an episode of the TV series, but still nowhere near as bad as its reputation and far from the worst Trek film. The worst I can say about it is that the humour could be a bit cringeworthy and inappropriate most of the time.

Another solid entry into the Trek saga. Frakes directs like he understands what Roddenberry was thinking when he created this universe. They really delve into the prime directive here, which is quite enjoyable. There is some nice touches of humour sprinkled in seamlessly as well.

I apparently enjoyed this one more than most. It's both a "Fountain of Youth" story and an allegory of the United States' (Federation) fraught past mistreating Native Americans (here the Ba'ku), though I suppose it could represent any other colonial-native relationship. Unfortunately, the plot is overly complicated to the point where that particular storyline can't be fully explored. Still, Patrick Stewart always impresses, and Frakes is an unassuming but competent director.

Insurrection is definitely one of the worst Next Generation films. Many Star Trek fans say the Next Generation films feel more like overlong episodes as apposed to feature films. And whilst I don't feel that way about Generations & First Contact, I would definitely brand this film a poor episode that has been spread across a feature length runtime. Plot wise it feels very uneventful and uninteresting. It just doesn't contribute anything to the franchise and I'm surprised 'Nemesis' followed.

A mashup of a couple of TNG episodes though not as good as either. Insurrection is just depressingly average, nothing about it stands out, there's no memorable scenes for better or worse, the whole movie is just...there. The plot has a fair few holes in it with some murky character motivation thrown in, but none of it really feels important enough to care about. There's a lazy sense of going through the motions here, the series had episodes that covered similar themes, but are much better.

What a waste of incredibly gifted talent. F. Murray Abraham is such a gifted actor, there should have been a better way to have used him in the Star Trek Universe. As a fan of the shows and several of the movies, I am disappointed and embarrassd by this movie. It might have made a good episode, but as a movie it was almost the death nell for the franchise.
