Based on the story of Dorothy Stratten, 1980 Playmate of the Year, Star 80 explores a brief and tragic career that was engineered by Stratten's loutish husband and manager, Paul Snider. Shunned by the rich and powerful people who court his beautiful, ingenuous wife, Snider makes her first the beneficiary and then the victim of his own ambition. (imdb)

Just waiting 2 hours for the gut punch. Absolutely insane how good (slimy monster) Eric Roberts is in this, he's tremendous.

It took me a while to figure out what I found so compelling here since the story - sweet girl falls for a smooth talking dirtbag who ruins her life - is now a cliche. There's also never any doubt of how it's going to end. But (except for how guileless it paints Stratten) it feels more honest. Snider isn't the stereotypical possessive batterer. He's not really jealous of other guys, but of her fame. It also shows that although each new guy offers her more & better, they only care bc she's hot.

The way it's all put together with the quasi documentary style is more annoying than anything. It's about the world of sleaze but the film itself lacks any of that to make it interesting. Good performance by Roberts tho

This is a pretty creepy movie featuring a wonderful performance by Eric Roberts as the bucket-of-extra-creepy Paul Snider, mentor and murderer of the unfortunate Dorothy Stratten (ably played by Mariel Hemingway). Cliff Robertson is good as Hefner and Fosse's direction still shows flashes of brilliance.

What a great character piece! Roberts shines in a fascinating role. Hopefully the enthusiastic attention it got on The Video Archives Podcast episode will encourage more people to check it out.

I wish that Eric Roberts hadn't fallen off like he did. He could have still been making good films like Star 80 and not the crap he does from his bathroom like A Talking Cat!?

A messy film, with some odd sequencing, but it has mostly good intentions behind it. Hemingway is alright (though a little dazed and not present), whereas Roberts is what really makes this film -- his downward spiral into desperation is all kinds of involving to be a spectator to (out of 596 roles, could this be his best?)

I was left with a distinct feeling of "what's the point?" Yes, the story was tragic, but so are the 90-second tragedy blurbs we see on the local news every night. This movie felt like one of those stretched out to 2 hours. There just wasn't enough substance to make me care.
