You know, it's funny... the best scene in this action movie is one with no action at all: Peter, alone with Aunt May, finally confesses his true role in Uncle Ben's death. That scene, in a nutshell, exemplifies the movie's fundamental humanity, which elevates what could easily have been a routine, mediocre comic-book sequel into something really special.

How did I miss this one? I loved Tobey's elastic pain face, the montage w/ freeze-frame, the zeal with which the writers constantly shit on Peter, and the wonderfully inorganic way that every character lectures a high-schooler about the nature of heroism. Cast is solid and Raimi's direction is confident, selling the comedy, horror, and even the drama in a surprisingly moving scene that manages to kill Uncle Ben again.

Better than the first! I'm a big fan of Marvel, Dark Horse and DC comics, but out of all of them Spider-man would have to be my favorite. The acting from Alfred Molina and Tobey Maguire is great, and the action sequences are incredible! This time Sam Raimi adds drama and more life and depth into the films. The movie is a perfect mix of romance and action! This is one fantastic thrill-ride of a movie!

Has lost a bit of luster due to the influx of some really great comic movies in '08 (specifically "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight), but it's still a fun ride with a better villain and more complex relationships than the first. The fight on the elevated subway is one of the most thrilling action sequences that I can recall.

The balance between elaborately and expertly staged action sequences and character development that is both touching and necessary makes this the best superhero movie of the last 10 years. That includes the good (The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Super), the bad (any X-men movie, Thor, ), and the ugly (Superman Returns, Wolverine, Green Lantern, Green Hornet, this list goes on longer than it should).

I love this film! Still lacks some of the wisecracking tone of the comic books, but this is more of a cinematic take on the character as oppose to a comic book film. I was personally all for it. Molina is really good as Doctor Octavius. Superhero movie or not, this is just a really good story, with some effects that have aged liked fine wine. One of the best Spider-Man movies and perhaps the most personal of the bunch.

Quite possibly my favorite super hero movie, Spider Man 2 somehow out did the first for me. Sam Raimi is my favorite director of all time, as I found shots reminiscent of Evil Dead scattered throughout, and other tendencies/ drawbacks from other films (Bruce Campbell's cameo itself) Doc Ock is one of the coolest villains in the Spider Man universe, and he doesn't disappoint, nothing in this does. This movie flows really steadily and feels like the most natural portrayal of the character.

Maguire is great again. The special effects are cool, especially during the first appearance of Doc Ock (who I thought resembled someone from my kindergarten). It seemed to me that Dunst does everything she can to try to ruin this film. I strongly feel that this film might now hold the record for most "annoying screams" in any film I have ever seen. The one problem with sequels is that it is hard for the film to surprise u as much as the original does, but still a solid movie.

The sequel takes itself a little more seriously than the first movie, but in almost every other way it's an improvement. It's more exciting and engaging, and the special effects are notably better. The scenes of Spidey swinging his way above the streets of Manhattan are exhilirating. Parker's identity crisis plays out rather predictably, but it's sophisticated enough for the genre. But why does Doc Ock bother to rob a bank? Why doesn't he just steal the stuff he needs and cut out the middleman?

The best of the trilogy by far, mixing special effects, action, comedy, drama, romance, and character development for as satisfying a summer movie package as has ever been concocted. I like this. Started out by thinking that Peter was being kind of whiny, but I came to admire the many, many creative ways the scriptwriters had found to grind him into the dirt. Aunt May really shone here. And the train scene is iconic, even with some awkward green-screen effects. Best part was probably Alfred Molina as Doc Oc.

For me, this is actually a little weaker than the first one. Alfred Molina is absolutely wonderful as Doc Ock, but somehow Peter Parker's personal drama (apart from his scenes with Aunt May) is just never quite compelling enough to justify the weight it's given in the script. Still a fun movie from a talented director, though, with one of the most chilling "transformation scenes" in any comic book movie.

I always tend to forget how good this is until I revisit it. Marvel has really morphed into a well-oiled superhero movie-making machine, so I feel that these earlier superhero movies tend to be forgotten. This is an actually good movie. Uninteresting. Occasional mildly amusing moments fail to make up for a dull and simple-minded plot that turns on themes of heroism and sacrifice. The sequences in which the protagonist flies about town on his webs may be technically complex but look quite artificial to these eyes, and utterly fail to thrill. The same could be said for the over-the-top action generally. Unimpressive Elfman score. Although no doubt very remunerative, for me it is a pity Raimi got caught up with these blockbusters.

The first film was good, its sequel is great. The characters are deep and well-rounded, the acting is certainly good enough, while the story doesn't take a back-seat to the action. It can also be a standalone film, which, to me, always shows the making of a good film in a series. If the story it tells can begin and end with one film, while still keeping all the continuity and nuances of the rest of the series, then it's a good film in my eyes. Spider-Man 2 does this, and does it incredibly well.

Let's get the negatives out of the way first; yes, the acting is mostly pretty bad, the dialogue is really stilted and awkward at times... but beyond that, this is still probably my favorite superhero film. It succeeds, for me, because the story and the pacing are exactly on the mark for a Spider-Man movie, it's consistently entertaining and really makes you root for the hero himself. It's very earnest in what it is, and it never becomes gritty crap like Dark Knight--love this one.

Held top honours for superhero films in my book. That is, until TDK came out. Aunt May's preachy speeches are a bit much, but otherwise this movie hits all the right notes. We have a visually and emotionally interesting villain, several terrific action sequences (especially the train fight), and a great script by Alvin Sargent that knows the film's protagonist isn't the costume, but the boy underneath it. Molina is excellent as Ock, and the movie itself is one of the best blockbusters ever made.

More of a character study than an action movie (though the train fight is great and the villain compelling): a poignant hero’s journey (“Sometimes we have to be steady and give up the thing we want the most”) and wonderfully goofy and emo coming-of-age arc complete with Murphy’s Law mishaps (poor guy never got an hors d’ouerve) and a complicated romance (see the flip-flop at the coffee shop). The thread with Harry is awkward though (Peter literally says “There are bigger things happening here”).

A worthy sequel to the first film and mostly just as good as well. Alfred Molina does for Dr. Octopus what Willem Defoe did for Green Goblin in the first film and his chewing the scenery elevates a lot of the film to more fun territory. Much like the best Spider Man media, his humanity is what defines him more than a lot of other super heroes. Is it a good Spider-man movie? Yes. Is it the best Spider-man movie? Not even close. I think people have serious nostalgia goggles on with these Raimi/Maguire movies. They do handle some things well, but they do so many things wrong. The dialogue is atrocious, there's no chemistry between characters, Spider-man doesn't feel right and Peter doesn't feel natural, and Raimi creates too many cringy cheesy moments. That being said, the action, story, and music are great in this movie.

Viewed September 24, 2021. The elevated train sequence is indeed fantastic but, just on principle, I dislike that a series so indebted to New York had to invent a train that doesn't exist in Manhattan to pull it off.
