The positives and negatives balance each other out and you're left with a movie that's the very definition of okay. The negatives being sometimes the tonal shifts from comedy to thriller/drama don't work, and some of the musical choices are poor. The positives being Wahlberg excels in these types of roles and while the story and action is predictable, it's ultimately okay enough to get some enjoyment from this.

Breezy tale that benefits from an unusually aggressive girlfriend, a black offsider whose dialogue refreshingly never sounds like it is from "the street", and above all from the presence of Arkin. Some of the comedy is quite funny, but the plot seems to be generated by an algorithm and it isn't always possible to tell when the film is being deliberately ironic (e.g., when a character employs the time-honoured cliché, "I think it's time you told me what's really going on"). My third Wahl/Berg.

This is an enjoyable movie. The script is predictable but it works. The actors seem to be having a good time here. Overall I would recommend this movie.

Comes across a bit clumsy in tone and execution. It's never very snappy or particularly thrilling, but it's enough of each to entertain for its two hours. Plus Winston Duke is cute and fashionable, so that's nice.

not so good

This is the best movie to have LOBSTAH as text onscreen. Dare you to prove me wrong.

As a Spenser adaptation this is a horrifically disfigured bastardization, but as a crime movie with bits of wisecracking here and there, I was pretty happy with it. Movie adaptations of hard boiled detectives are like unicorns these days, so I tend to love the bad and the good alike. Would love to see about twenty more of these, though.

More Wahlberg entertaining garbage.

The plot was not at all believable. Dialogs were lame. Markey Mark was not convincing. It was awesome to see Eliza Shlesinger as the hot mess. Lame gun battle. Predictable and tedious at times. There were lots of sometimes good action. Very good production quality and soundtrack. Overall, it's watchable if you can overlook all the nonsense, huge plot holes and play acting.

I love chill but obsessed vigilante always trying to solve injustices in Boston -- with lots of cute Bostonian rudeness -- but it mostly fails big time at starting a franchise with such generic assets: buddy material never takes off, action-to-music montages seem dated and the plot is way convoluted and not suited for a project that should have had way more action set-pieces than that final one at the soon-to-be-Casino. Disappointing and less stupidly intense, action-drive we expect from Berg.

Wahlberg is likable as is the rest of the cast in what is a very erratic action narrative that relies on the one punch after another twist approach.It very seldom works and it does until the grand finale here.A cast of likable outsiders just has to be given the escape potential from a near impossible situation to have everyone come out clean and happier than before. I am not sure why every well paced, well acted action set piece feels the need to end like this. It's kinda shameful at this point.

I think casting Post Malone sums this film up: poor show, guys

the most fascinating aspect of this movie is what compelled all of these actors, presumably with rich, full, sustained lives, to come together to make it. Iliza Shlesinger is very hot in it and the old beagle is very cute. spend more time with your family, Mark.

nothing unique. watchable.

The action and comedy stuff is okay, mainly thanks to a likable Wahlberg in the lead, the more serious crime-thriller aspect less so. Unfortunately the later becomes more and more prominent, making it less and less entertaining.

I have no prior knowledge about this movie. I watched it as unbiased as I could be. Verdict: Entertaining, but nothing more than that.

It's not like I expected this to be good but, it's just mediocre throughout. Mark Wahlberg's character reminded me of his character in "The Big Hit" but the film built him up to be too much for the film itself. Wasted opportunity with the cast and fairly lazy story.

Spenser has just been released from prison. Soon after his release, the ex-cop is sucked back into the Boston underworld and discovers the truth behind a high-profile murder. There appears to be an enormous conspiracy behind the murder. Spenser teams up with Hawk, an MMA fighter, to uncover the truth.

Was OK!

When you really try to be Shane Black except you have this problem where you're not Shane Black. Winston Duke is a highlight, though. Despite his character being badly underwritten Duke just oozes charisma. True movie star.

Feels very paint by numbers and like all the actors know it too.

Predictable, but entertaining still.

I can't think of one redeeming quality here. Avoid at all cost.

Entertaining is all I wanted, and it met that minor requirement.

The was a very watchable fun film. Was it anything groundbreaking or even special? No, but it was solid and kept me entertained and the ending had me wanting more.

So this is how we make movies these days? Incredibly lazy - doesn't even set up its own characters, but just uses those of other movies (sometimes incongruously so).

Fun movie. Action, comedy and drama all rolled up into one wild ride.

I would buy netflix just for this show.

Not a very deep of sophisticated movie. Though the story has been told before, it still was entertaining to watch. Didn't realize there was a book series or a TV show until I went to write the review. Made me want to look into them.

At first quite ok, I even had an interest in what was being set up. But as the story unfolded, especially during the final 3rd, everything went down the drain. The humor, the characters (the gf, the roommate, the ex-partner), the plotting everything made me grin uncomfortably.
