The city stands on the brink of social, economic, and environmental disaster. Southland Tales is an epic story set over the course of three days that culminate in a massive 4th of July celebration. One day, Richard Kelly put David Lynch, the Cohen brothers and Terry Gilliam into a blender and hit puree. This action resulted in global deceleration, slowing the rotation of the Earth by .00000006 miles per hour each day. It also disrupted the chemical equilibrium inside the brains of human beings who watched "Southland Tales". For most, it caused irrational, criminal behavior. However, a small percentage of the audience ended up inside a floating ice cream truck while touching themselves.

The worst thing about Southland Tales is spending over two hours concentrating hard on all the rubbish that's going on, hoping that it'll be worth it in the end. It isn't. You feel sorry for the acting ensemble who play their parts ably but are stuck in this confused Verhoeven/Gilliam rip-off that thinks the old non-linear plot + quirky visuals + ill-fitting soundtrack = good film. It doesn't. The narration is waay overdone too. Richard Kelly is an overrated hack.

I have never been so frustrated by a movie after it was over. Impeccable casting (Christopher Lambert AND Jon Lovitz?!) and a decent idea giveway to overblown political allegories and masturbatory eschatology. There might be something salvageable if someone completely reedits the footage, since nothing FLOWS and plot points seem to appear out of the nowhere. Or it could make a decent TV series. Maybe.

The kind of movie that will stay in my head for a long time. What Kelly does with the cast is amazing. The music is incredible. There is a definite vision behind all of this. It's one of the most unique films I've had the privilege of seeing. I could say it's a little too ambitious, but there's no such thing in filmmaking. A brilliant satire that hopefully people will be remembering several decades from now.

I just loved this beautifully incoherent yet strangely enthralling film. The good cinematography and great soundtrack helped. At no point in the entire film did I have the slightest idea what the fuck went on. I daresay that became the real fun of it; the film feels more like a ride than a movie. Every ten minutes I'd end up asking myself, "What the fuck lunacy will happen next?" The answer would surprise me every time.

Yes, it's mostly incoherent and random and way too pretentious for its own good, but... I still enjoyed myself. I can completely understand people hating this, but when the movie starts out with amnesia and Marxists and dystopian government control and ends with flying ice-cream trucks, glowing handshakes and time travel I can't help but grin and enjoy the ride.

I like this film because it has no fucking clue what is going on. I don't either. Let freedom reign. I get the impression that Richard Kelly is one of those rare people that is intelligent but completely incapable of expressing themselves coherently. There may be a message there, but I don't think even he can comprehend it. And I find that kind of beautiful.

"Southland Tales" is a colorful assembly of so many things, that on a first viewing, I felt as most of the critics who reviewed the film did. I was confused, I was angry, I was bored, I felt cheated, and I hated it with a passion. But I refused to believe that there was nothing there. I knew there had to be 'something' there. And on multiple views, more and more became clear; and I began to realize the power in Kelly's concoction.

This is the most blatantly over the top, unsubtle satire I've seen in a long time. That complete ridiculousness is what makes it so fun to watch though. The actors are all in on the joke, hamming it up without breaking character and Kelly bombards the viewer with so much shit that I can't believe it's not self parody. The plot is nonsensical in that it's completely absurd but it really isn't hard to follow. It's no masterpiece but it's daring and original enough to be worthwhile.

I swear, this was such a chore to get through. It's got a lot of lore and there's a world built on that. This world seems plausible, funny and ironic, and I think the setting was what I enjoyed about this movie the most. But this plot and the script, it's so disjointed, confusing and way too long to hold my interest. If you're waiting for it to pay off in the end, it doesn't.

Watched the Cannes cut after previously watching the theatrical cut in 2009 and hating it. Look, I’m not going to pretend this is suddenly a good movie, or that it isn’t a complete fucking mess, but it definitely has more going for it than I remembered, from the performances (The Rock absolutely understood the assignment) to just honestly the entertainment value of seeing so many bugnuts ideas squashed together. Plus a lot of the satire is way funnier than I remembered. Solid nonsense.

I first watched this around 2010, I think, and did not really get. But in a post-2016 world and in isolation, it made so much more sense and I liked it a whole lot more. The problem is that while it explores interesting dystopian ideas, there's not a strong 'human' character to ground it for me and that makes it rather cynical. Still a worthy watch in my book. It's funny how much my flatmate adores is though. Lots of love for prophetic sex worker entrepreneur played by lovely SMG.

Lasted till just past the midway point. The attempt to capture the character of contemporary existence as deranged, frenetic, ubiquitously screened and under constant surveillance, and perhaps as failing to reach the threshold of existence at all, is detectable and even admirable, but for all that, and for this viewer, nevertheless fails to reach the threshold of watchability. This is so in a way comparable to the unreadability, for this reader, of a novel such as Charles Stross's Accelerando.

(Cannes cut) Richard Kelly is such a prankster. Or maybe he's like a cat who brings a dead bird to show for the masters. His second feature film Southland Tales is incoherent mess of nonsense. Wardrobe used in the film deserves a special mention, as a worst I have seem in a long time. And he brought that to Cannes, to the most unforgiving audience. I can only guess what he was thinking. Either way, in the end the joke is on him. He messed up his golden ticket.

How do I approach this? It's a mess, it's really calculated. It depends on whether you agree with "a movie pretending to be bad is good" or not. It definitely has tons to say and for that, good job Kelly, but a lot of people will be and have been turned off by this. From a narrative standpoint, it's a disaster, but maybe that's the point. Everytime I want to hate an aspect of it, I wonder if it's intentional. Frustrating, maybe great, maybe shit, but I'm giving it an 77 regardless. Might change.

Not as painful to watch as I would've expected (being over two hours of nonsense), this one is difficult to review. The story is pure madness, but there are some great moments as well - Justin Timberlake singing The Killers anthem being one of them. Also loved the Pixies song in the middle. Suffers from odd casting - Seann William Scott is just wrong for the role.

Where to begin...just a mess, really. Richard Kelly is a good director (as proven by Donnie Darko), but a godawful storyteller. There was entirely too much shoved into this, and almost none of it worked. The political/social commentary was overdone and obvious. There were some funny moments, and I definitely laughed a lot at the sheer absurdity of it all. There's some good shots and interesting imagery here, but its just not enough to excuse how messy and stupid the whole thing is.

After a first 30 minutes I got sure I will hate it, I got slowly drifted into it and at the least the rest proved to be a brainstorm. Watching this movie feels like watching someone's fever dream. I loved being taken on a ride on this chaotic dreamscape that went nowhere at all. It's probably much more enjoyable if you simply vibe with the movie and don't care too hard for the plot. It's about the journey, not the destination. Same as Donnie Darko actually, I wish Richard Kelly had done more movies in this style. The highs are highs, the lows are low. Deserved to flop, but not that hard. I am left wanting more.

Either the greatest or worst thing ever depending on how much drugs you take. (Eight years later, I watch it again, and I guess I found the right drugs.) One of those rare treats of a talented cast (love just about everyone. mostly specifically here, too) wrapped around one of the strangest scripts you will witness in concept / dialogue / structure. I think the overt political angle annoyed me originally, but this anti-Bush era stuff just seems quaint now and the rest is a blast.

A beautiful mess, with the emphasize on mess. I have to hand it to mr. Kelly for having the balls to follow through on his vision, even if ends up so outrageous. The plot is overstuffed, the political satire shallow. But what's most shocking is that the man who made Donnie Darko; completely forget one of the basic rules of script writing: It's all about the characters! I didn't give a shit about anyone in this and if any had an emotional journey it's completely lost under the incoherent plot.

Did I enjoy Southland Tales? Despite being unable to comprehend most of it, I kind of did. It's visually creative, always entertaining, and absolutely insane. No, it's not good, as it's often incoherent, its ideas are difficult to decipher and so much of it is just too confusing to be worthwhile, but that doesn't mean it's not fun. It has a great cast, has some interesting individual ideas and representations of the future, and is never boring.

There are so many relevant themes in this film that it threatens to contort itself into at once a chaotic paean to the military-industrial-complex to a complete indictment of conservative ideology, then back again entangled into the absurdist, indifferent, black comedy of social satire. At times menacingly dystopian and relentlessly eccentric, Southland Tales refuses to settle into the familiar in its attempt to be everything and nothing at once. An incredibly beautiful incoherent film.

This isn't a movie, much like Tolkein's Silmarillion isn't a novel. Like Tolkein, Kelly constructs a whole alternate world that's fleshed out with scrutinizing detail and so enmeshed in a cultural and artistic Baudriallardian simulacra that the pastiche of references and allusions is staggering. Finishing this movie is like unplugging from the Matrix, or waking up from a very visceral dream. Must see.

This is a uniquely terrible work. The story is ridiculously contrived to the nth degree, without a prayer of true resolution by its conclusion. It fails as a science fiction satire, trying to amplify the absurdities of mass media culture and winding up with something depressingly unfunny and boring. The film isn't daring in its approach, nor is it remotely compelling in its frantic, fragmented, desperate quest to tell you about everything going on in this pointless fantasy.

Is it a comedy? Is it a conspiracy theory? Is it science fiction? Is it a musical? Is it a pornographic sit-com? Is it political satire? It's all of them, it's everything, it's nothing. It's logic lies in it's irrationality, it's meaning lies in it's meaninglessness. It's not a movie, it's an experience. And a unique one too. With no question, one of the most original films of the decade.

Where to begin with this film... I'm a The Rock apologist. I like Moby's score. I love Donnie Darko and found that I respected Kelly's ambitiousness as much here. But he's in way over his head. An fascinating mess but a messy failure all the same.

Mind-numbingly incoherent, the horrible writing lays waste to some cool potential ideas.
